Finally...The Ontario Government today announced work will begin in November on new rest stops along the 401...not bad, only 2 years in the making!

If there's a way McGuinty can scr*w up this province to any greater degree, please don't mention it here as he'll do it for sure! Gad, tell all the fuel companies and private service providers at least two years in advance you won't be renewing any leases and then wonder why they don't spend a nickel on infrastructure inprovements so our rest stops began to resemble cantinas in Mexico, only dirtier! Have your retarded transport minister revamp hours of service rules and lower speed limits for the trucks & even fine one for smoking in the cab of his own truck, then close down all the places they need to sleep at or stop at for that smoke. Spend money on tourism ads and bemoan the slow border crossing times coming into the country but make everyone drive non-stop from Windsor to Montreal without fuel or food right on the highway. Jeez, you'd have to work real hard to come up with a better way to sabotage the travelling public.

I just love it when he says we're going to have to be patient with him for running a deficit, I'd love to castrate him for that billion dollar E-health debacle! Not to mention the lottery scandel before that! Aaaargh.

I feel better now.

Waste of tax money, there was nothing wrong with the rest stops that were closed and now they are building new ones?
Its just a rest stop ,doesnt have to be the Ritz,Travelers need them for snooze, coffee and bathroom break which the previous rest areas provided adequately.

Driving west from Sault Ste. Marie in early April I often looked longingly at the snowplow turnarounds, but saw the admonishing signs that identified them as no-go zones. A huge bump west of Thunder Bay sent us airborne and, looking around, there was a damaged semi layed up from also hitting it at speed. Talking to a trucker farther down the road revealed the bump had been there for more than a year.

Our rest area in Thunder Bay was improvised on a residential street, and served us for two days, we had been lucky, at close to 50 feet with our towed, to find an empty lot to park in front of, as 40 cm of snow began to fall. We lost another day parked at the Dryden Walmart when the highway was reported as closed near Kenora. The line up to get through was said to be 75 km, by a trucker and 100 km on a radio news broadcast. Two truckers were said to have died in a 7 vehicle pile-up there.

Yes travel in Northwestern Ontario can be an adventure. Its no place for an RV if there's a chance of snow! Even if there were rest stops, no doubt they would not have been open the first week of April, though the only snow we saw was at Thunder Bay. The driving distances are long but there are Huskys for fuel and food. We rejoiced at Wawa where truckers had adopted an Esso for nap times and we joined them.

I'm happy to hear the rest stops are back on the table. We go back & forth to Mississauga a few times a year (without the rv) to visit family. It's really miserable not being able to stretch my legs and grab a coffee every couple of hours without driving off the 401 forever.

I do have to agree with jambo that the existing ones were fine for us; I guess it's all relative to expectations.

This topic has been discussed before HERE.

After comparing our chaotic service centres (when they've been open) with the simpler, more effective ones in the US, I'll choose the US concept any day. It's part of the infrastructure that one should demand from our government, with a minimum of private sector involvement, IMHO. Do you really need the McDonald's and Tim Horton's at these places? Give me a clean restroom, a place to rest for a few hours if needed, and perhaps some vending machines and tourist brochures.

X2!

That's all we ask for & from what I've seen on the road in the US typical. Mind you the "Canadian way" seems to require a lot of gov't involvement in even the most mundane things.

Add to the fact VE3ESN's suggestion doesn't provide a big revenue stream, therefore not worth the effort in the eyes of the bureaucrats.

Someone going to put them on the clock & see when the 1st stop is re-opened?

On the other hand, I've seen elsewhere on the R & R forum that VA is closing a bunch of their rest areas.
