I love it! Been to Moab many times. Can never get enough of it. I've mountain biked most of the trails there but haven't done the White Rim Trail. Probably because it's just a dusty dirt road. Mountain bikers like that singletrack stuff. But your pictures of the slot canyon may make me rethink that ride. I was just there 7 weeks ago and if you don't mind I'll share some pics.

First night camping overlooking Arches NP.

Biking the Slickrock Trail. This trail made Moab famous (from a mountain biker perspective). I'm riding on a 800 ft deep petrified sand dune.

This is a local guy at the Mill Creek swimming hole. This is not an easy jump. Very little room for error.

Biking the world famous Porcupine Rim Trail overlooking Castle Valley.
Another shot of Porcupine Rim. That's a long way down!

Camping off HW 279, below Poison Spider Trail.

Pat,
Thanks for your great photo-documentary on this interesting trek!
From most of your photos it looks like our 24 foot Class C, driven very slowly, could do it too in dry weather. (I hear you laughing!!)

Thanks for the photos and text -- very entertaining! I just missed an inning of the 3rd game of the World Series because of your great writing. (And congratulations on having married such an adventurous lady -- if she is willing to do more serious desert boondocking after that windstorm, you are a lucky guy!)

I've driven the loop in a single day several times, and have done the camping thing a couple more. The rangers can warn about the sand, isolation, etc., but they don't seem to warn you about the winds at Airport Camp. Sand in the tent, sand in the food, sand on the bikes. Make one rethink the whole thing in the morning until you get back on the road again. Too bad you didn't get to camp at Murphy's Hogback. What a wonderful spot with views nearly to infinity.
Those switchbacks coming out of the canyon seem imposing, but one trip we got to the top of them and ran into an old 2WD school bus with a bunch of young women in bikini's standing around. (For me, it was a trip with another guy and we both thought the desert heat was making us see things -- wonderful things to be sure ) They had just come off the river at Mineral Bottom and their bus had overheated on the way up. Hard to believe they did it w/o 4x4, but they did. IIRC, it was an old six cylinder engine to boot.
It's tough to describe the quiet and solitude one experiences along this trail. BTW, did you see any of the desert bighorn sheep along the road? They don't seem too afraid of vehicles anymore.

Thanks for all the comments and love seeing more photos of others doing the WRT.
You guys that do it with the Slide In Campers are just crazy!! THere were sections that we have very little room to spare on either side, and the overhangs were only a few feet from the roof of the truck.
I'd love to follow you along the trail some time to see how close you actually get to the rocks.

Its a cool trip and great report...we did the trip years ago before permits were required...(in the 70's)...stayed over night in tents with about 6 or 7 families on the trip...we took our buggies...it was a blast. We started playing in canyon country in the 60's...things have changed since then..
