I just checked to see that Keesler is on IH10. We weren't able to travel that way in May because of a lot of rain and flooding problems. We traveled on IH 20 to go from Texas to Georgia and were going to return on IH 10. I do remember I was glad to have a class A because it seemed the rest areas were closed and you could see where a gas station was supposed to be available from the exit sign on IH 20, but had been removed. We were glad we carried our bathroom and food with us.

I don't know if you are planning on site seeing or driving straight there and back, but near Huntsville, AL in Scotsboro, AL is the unclaimed luggage store. We had planned on going there, but again was unable too. It sounds like a neat place to shop. We enjoyed camping at FT Rucker, AL and FT Benning, GA (in the middle, you enter in Georgia, but the camp ground is in Alabama. Had deer join us at our camp site.

My tip is plan on thanksgiving dinner off base. Worst thanksgiving I ever ate was at one of the low fat, low carb, no sugar, Air Force dining facilities. I was at Patrick not Keesler but I understand that they have all gone healthy instead of tasty.

Huntsville also has Redsone Arsenal, although I have not stayed at their famcamp, it gets good reviews.

Sumguy,

I lived in Biloxi/Gulfport for 3 years before Katrina. Best place for fuel is at one of the I-10 truckstops west of Keesler/Biloxi in the Gulfport/Long Beach area. Freinds still living in the area tell me that the tourist infrastructure (i.e. restaraunts) are still kind of few and far between since Katrina.

I was a Florida Army National Guard Officer and spent Christmas with my brother (an Active Duty Air Force Officer) and his family at Keesler just before I was deployed to Saudi for Desert Storm. The O-club food was some of the best I have had.

I grew up in Huntsville, Alabama and am living in the area once again. While I love the area, I suggest you skip it for this trip. We are on the wrong side of the mountains. Save us for another trip. BTW the fall colors are at their peak right now! If you do plan a Tennessee Valley trip and you can stay on post, be sure to check out the German food at the Guesthouse on Redstone Arsenal. The Space and Rocket Center is a great museam and is located 1 exit east (I-565) of the main visitors' gate for Redstone and NASA.

Thanks Clark. I would need diesel .. got ride of the Mega Cab gasser ..
We are really just planning the trip to see the son. I would not be upset if I had to lounge around the camper all weekend ... ZZZZZzzzzz whats the average temp during this time of the year ?...Leaving on Weds morn round 4am and heading back on Sunday morn. Figuring a 14 hour ride. If Im towing the camper, I add 2 hours to mapquest time. If not, I take 2 hours off ... cant do 80-85 with 5 to 7k on the hook .. I dont rush it. If the girls (travelling with wife, 12 and 8 year old daughters .... sigh ) dont need to stop very often, I usually run 250 miles, refuel, take care of business, grab a bite and off we go again. It will be the first pull with the Cummins. The Mega cab gasser could handle 65 comfortably. Wondering if I could bump that up to 70 with the Cummins. But again. I dont rush it. Speed depends on alot of factors. Flat level road being in light traffic I might bump it up to 65.

Sumguy,

Expect daytime temps in the low 50's or upper 40's but it can freeze if conditions are right.

Keep the speed under 65 if you have ST tires on the camper. If you upgraded to LT tires you may go higher in AL as the speed limit here is the same for cars, trucks, and trailers.

Enjoy the time with your son.

I went back to the MS coast about 2 years ago for a brief visit and almost cried. All of the beautyfull old homes along the coast are gone.
