Hello, I am new to this forum, but not to the camping experience! We are planning on a trip to Samson State park in New York next summer, but have no experience at crossing the border while towing a trailer. I,ve heard you can only take certain food, and taking the dog, we need proof of rabies shot (anything else?). If someone has some info on this park please inform. thankyou

We crossed into North Dakota last summer and had no problems. We had the proof of the dog's shots with us, but were never asked. We had canned goods, and sealed original packages for dry goods. Bought our meats and the like once we were in the US. Don't carry firewood, or any wood with bark on it. Had a Class C turned around and barred entry for that reason. I use finished wood for my pads and levelers, and there was no problem with those. The Border guy did a quick walk-thru of the trailer, opened a cupboard or two and sent us on our way. No problems encountered.

We have never had any issues at all, except last time US guard took my wifes orange, said no fruit.

Just in case ... Some places will not accept rabies tags, but want certificate signed by a vet.

Don't forget the dog food. Current regulations (it always changes) is no lamb or goat listed on the ingredients.

We always do all our grocery shopping after crossing, less hassle and about half the cost.

BTW the Rabies shot cannot be within the last 30 days, it takes this long to become effective.

I've not been to Sampson, but the Finger Lakes area is quite beautiful, in all seasons. Wine trails, lakes, local history, etc. We have family in the area.
We were through Letchworth SP last month, and enjoyed the leaves and views of the "Grand Canyon of the North" very much. Would be a nice day trip for you just beyond the Finger Lakes.
Coming back to the U.S. from Canada this summer, we were asked for passports, and questioned about cigarettes, alcohol, etc. An officer went thru each trailer quickly looking for produce, especially. We had given away or consumed all ours before leaving Canada, except canned goods. We did the same crossing into Canada from the U.S. ... plenty of places to buy groceries on each side of the border, less hassle.
Specific rules are available on http://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/tunnel-heights.htm

The definitive source for entry to the US:

http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/

and for coming home:

http://www.beaware.gc.ca/english/toce.shtml

I have transited US/CAN border many times with and without trailer in tow as have many of my friends. Follow the rules, answer the questions. NO ISSUES. I have had our rig inspected by US Customs 1 time and it was more of a stick your head in the door look around...

Be sure to have the proper identification documents as well:

We live in Ontario right on the Michigan border and cross quite often.
We have found that it is easiest to just do ALL your grocery shopping after you cross into the U.S. While there are many things you can cross with, it just seems like the rules change all the time, or maybe are just enforced differently from one time to the next.
We were even told once by a customs agent that canned vegtable beef soup was a no-no because it had beef in it.
Oh, and BTW, the rules on dog food are that it has to be in a new sealed package that was made and PACKAGED in the U.S.
But really, it's not a big deal. Have your passport ready and get your groceries after you get to where your going.

I have to disagree. Please provide proof of this statement.

Only New Zealand lamb, in it's original, unopened package.
No citrus fruit.

IF you care to read the links I posted they will guide you to the CORRECT information, not misinformation posted above.

As far as shopping on the US Side of the border, why? Mostly everything is permisable to transit borders theese days and the US prices on most food items are equal to ours but in US dollars. There are a select few things i buy in the USA as far as food items go and that's only because they are N/A here in .CA
