We will be travelling from Ontario to Myrtle Beach in March and Streets and Trips shows this as part of the route. We have previously driven the section from Ontario down to I 64, but was wondering what the roads are like through this National Forest. Understand that some of the routes through the mountains here can be difficult.
Thanks for any input.

No problem at all. I live just off I-64 at exit 24 in VA and drive to Charleston all the time. There are some hills but nothing of any real consequence.

You'll be continuing south on I-77 from Beckley and there are some hills but nothing to worry about. Just start down the longer ones slow and gear down a gear or two. Keep in mind it is all interstate and good road with light traffic, relatively speaking.

If it's clear when you drop down the hill from VA into NC check out the view.

Mt. Airy, just into NC is Andy Griffith's home and was the model for Mayberry. Worth a stop for a day or two.

Thanks again.

That view coming into NC from VA is truly spectacular, but take it easy. I've not measured it, but it appears to be approximately 87 miles straight down from the highway to the valley below. This is an extremely beautiful part of the eastern U.S.

That stretch is almost the highlight of the trip. While it's not a stretch of road to make up time on, the grades are less severe than the Rte 19 leg of the trip. There are a couple of tolls to pay, not expensive. There are two tunnels, and you are supposed to turn propane off and no more than 2 20 lbs tanks, but it's not posted and they don't check. Once you get to Fancy Gap, it's all down hill from there!

Do it in daylight, the views are spectacular! Don't be low on fuel, fill up around Beckley area, there is no fuel to speak of through the national forest area. Ironically, I get the best fuel mileage of the trip on that section. Not going too fast, and lots of coasting down hills, I guess.

We did the route 19 section 4 years ago and it was no problem at all.
Thanks

If you don't need fuel around Beckley, perhaps you could make it to the Wytheville, VA area where there are two Flying J's. (one is actually at Max Meadows.)

We also love this part of the trip; the views are certainly spectacular.
