Read an article the other day showing where of all Ford model vehicles, about 80% were rated satisfactory or better (by Consumers Reports I think). GMC and Chrysler had less than 50% of their models rated at least satisfactory. Guess that is why they are in the shape they are in and Ford is making a profit.

I suspect that being in a financial position to refuse the bail out while continuing to build top quality products will prove to be a big benefit to them. Doing that well while maintaining higher labor costs is really a kind of surprise. I would expect to see some additional changes that address that problem shortly. Hope the trend continues.

The only hiccup I see when I read an article is the UAW refusing to budge on concessions to bring their labor costs a little more in line with GM and Chrysler. Surely even they must see that Ford is not out of the woods yet? A few profitable quarters does not mean they are home free and business can get back to where it was 5 years ago. Sometimes I wonder if the Unions actually think of the good of the company to keep their constituients jobs or just lining their pockets and taking all they can get. One would think a lesson as learned from the collapse of GM and Chrysler.

Keith99RS I tend to agree with you on that one but agreements with labor are not the ONLY way of reducing costs and if they can't negotiate the changes some of them would seem inevitable. In one sense the workers have Ford by the short hairs right now because a strike would pretty much take them back to the same place they just came from. I certainly would HOPE that they don't start looking at things like overseas production or plant closings but they could become more attractive down the road if costs can't be reduced to around the level of their competitors.

I agree with skipnchar's comment and Keith99RS makes a good point too.
I sure hope Ford continues on the good path they are on and do not stumble and tumble like the other two. I believe my 2009 F-150 is one of the best trucks Ford has produced. I have owned other F-150s back through the years which were good trucks, but '09 is a fantastic truck. The rest of their vehicle lineup looks pretty good also.

Skip I certainly agree with you. I don't think Ford needs to do anything as severe as the other Big 2 concession wise, however the article I read had the UAW saying they felt Ford was healthy enough to not need any oncessions. That is kind of scary. 5 years ago if you asked any of the Big 3 I doubt any of them would have predicted being bankrupt in 2009. Learn from your mistakes! That goes for the Big 3 and the UAW.

With $15 billion in debt, won't take them too long to be free and clear.

Ford has a lot on the ball these days. They had turned around their management and product lines well in advance of the recession and it is paying off.
One thing that I don't think gets mentioned a lot is the engineering benefit of the Volvo acquisition. A lot of Swedish DNA has found its way into the latest generation Ford cars and this has been to their benefit. If you ride in a Fusion or Taurus, they feel very solid.
