The 2007 has 57,000 miles, the '06 has 64,000 miles. The carfax reports on each are clean. The price on each is about where it should be ($32K vs. $28K), both look to have been taken care of.

Are you looking at 4X4 trucks? Those prices are a little steep. I did a search on Autotrader for the Syracuse area and found these two trucks:

2006 MegaCab 2WD, 39K miles, $27,000

2007 MegaCab SLT, 2WD, 25K miles, $29,000

I'm sure your region gets a fair amount of snow, so 4X4 is probably very handy. However, could you do okay with weight in the back of the truck and chains for the really bad days?

yes, these are four wheel drive--not sure I could ever live with two wheel drive again. I do a fair amount of hunting in the fall and winter, and you have to have it. Cornfields, two tracks, jeep trails, etc. If I ever tow a boat, I'd want it for boat launches. Plus I need four wheel drive sometimes on my lawn when the grass is wet in the mornings just to keep from ripping up the lawn. So that's a big part of the numbers game.

and then there's the snow.

Once you start driving the diesel, you will not want to drive the gasser.

My 85K 2005 QC 4X4 CTD had never seen the inside of a shop except for oil/filter changes. The 48RE is bulletproof. With the '07 I think you can put a brake on it (factory blessed). I replaced mine with an '08 due to the fact that it was due for a full fluid service and tires and the fact I wanted the brake and six speed auto and besides the price was too low to say no to. Besides it's only paper (linen) with numbers on it. I paid right at 29K for my 2008 loaded out. Don't need a Mega Cab as it's just the DW an me. JMHO Go for the '07 and never look back. Sell the FURD as others said.

The 5.9 does not come with a factory installed exhaust brake in '07. The 6.7 does.

The '06 seats stain really easily. I believe they fixed that problem in '07 and newer trucks. That alone might push me towards the '07.

Just made almost the exact same switch (2002 Ford, 2005 Dodge) and love it.

However, I would sell the F150 and get some sort of commuter car if you've got a longer commute (over 30 miles one way) or keep it as a winter vehicle (keep your shiny truck off the salt and not worry at all about fuel gelling) and give it to one of your kids in a couple of years (4 years will come pretty fast).

Otherwise, just drive the CTD every day. It'll get better mileage than your F150 did (mine gets the same mileage towing the racecar on a flatbed as the F150 did empty).

once again I'm really appreciating all the replies--the exhaust brake issue is significant, although with the current camper the tow/haul switch may be enough for now. I've read a little bit about that, is it still true that the Jake Brake is the one to get to preserve the warranty, versus the Pacbrake which supposedly works better?

On the seats, I'm glad you mentioned that--the dealer made a big deal out of that on the '07, didn't realize that was an improvement over the '06.

And commuting-wise, it's manageable. Basically fifteen miles to work one way, and I work home several days a week generally. Even still, I've managed to put 20K miles on the Ford annually over the past ten years, but much of that was longer trips.

I did just find another '07 mega cab 4x4 with the 5.9 on eBay motors, with 42,000 miles and asking $32500. That listing ended today and I'm guessing the truck sold. Still waffling on pulling the trigger, but you all are helping my thought process quite a bit, so thank you all again. I'm all ears.

I think the 06 and 07 5.9s w/autos are capable of the OEM (Jacobs) brake from Dodge. I have one installed on my 07. Works good, hardly use the service brakes at all, even going down mountain slopes. Warmup times are much better as well.

here's the exhaust brake info I found for the 2006 model year-- http://www.jakebrake.com/products/ld-exhaust.php -- so it looks like I could get that done when I get the cash. That makes the '06 a bit more reassuring, which with the lower price equalizes the two trucks again in my mind, or at least makes the decision trickier. But these are good problems to have.
