My husband and I are leaving Kelowna, Dec 2/09. We used Good Sam for route planning and the following routes was selected.
South by an BC interior route through WA by US-395,and I-90, through ID by I-90 to, MT onto I-15, switch back into ID on I-15, through UT on I-15, through NV I-15 into Las Vegas to US-95 to I-40 through to Needles,CA, Junctions with Rt 62 then Rt 72 and back onto US-95 through Quartzsite to I-8 to Yuma AZ.
A little complicated or so it seems. This is only our second trip south for four months. Last time down was through WA, OR, CA to Palm Springs. We would like some imput on travelling south from Kelowna, and we are not familiar with the type of terrain or driving experience necessary for using the Good Sam route. Just want to know what to expect, any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

I would suggest coming south on US 97, turning off onto WA 17 through Moses Lake to US 395 north of Pasco. Continue south to I-84 near Pendleton, east to US 95, then south to Las Vegas staying on US 95 basically all the way.

Google Maps gives 3 suggestions. The 'fastest', though not shortest, is using I5 (though this time could vary with rush hour traffic through cites like LA). Next is this US395, I90, I15 route. The shortest is the I84 through Oregon and Idaho to I15 route. But this involves more distance on state highways such as WA17.
I like Google Maps because it is easy to play with different routes. For example you could take I84 to US93, and take that south through Nevada. You can also zoom in on the route to get an idea of how curvy or mountainous a section is. They now have 'street views' of most major highways in the US, so it is possible 'drive' the whole route from home.
