Another to throw into the mix is the ford Fusion SEL. Or the Mercury Milan. Both can be purchased with the v-6 both have great fuel mileage.
Look at how the different car magizines rate them.
I also had an Impala which was a very good car but I like the Ford better.

I agree with asking your wife. She needs to go with you and test drive it at the very least.
I am the wife and I bought a 2009 Hyundai Sonata in September. It had 8,000 miles on it and was a very good deal. I traded my Hyundai Elantra which I loved too. I adore this one, as does DH, and it has cruise control (he really likes that, I never use it.) Couldn't be happier with it.

I bought this car at a Subaru dealer. The salesman told me that the best used car deals at dealer lots are those that are off brand. Buy a Ford at a Chevy dealer for example. I have no idea if that's true but I compared prices of similar used Hyundais at two local Hyundai dealerships and they were higher. He said the reason was that a Subaru dealer didn't want "alien" cars on their lots for long.

I've had both cars as long time rentals. In my books the Impala is much better...more room, more comfortable. The Fusion has a 6 speed automatic which is nice, but that little V6 seems to have to keep in it's higher rpm range for power.

When we replaced DW's TrailBlazer during the last gas crunch and because she no longer needed an SUV for work I wanted the Chrysler 300. Very nice car!!!

Since it was to be her car I let her make the final decision. She chose a nice used low mileage 06 Lincoln Zephyr. 3.0 V6 front wheel drive with traction control. OMG that is a nice car!!! Fun to drive, fru frus on top of fru frus (which she likes) and good in snow. 19/25 for mileage. We take at least 2 and sometimes 3 long trips a year in it and it is a pleasure to drive!!!!

My wife votes with her Hyundia Sonata 2006. We travel a lot in it and have put 70k on it already. Not one problem! The V6 gets 25 to 27 at home (we live in a gated community about 10 miles south of Granbury) and 32 on the road( we typically set CC at 70). The car is very comfortable a has more usable space than a friends Lincolin. With five guy in it they are all fine but if you are the middle of rear seat in the Lincolin you are in leg misery.

Sonata has Electronic Stability Control, Traction control, disc brakes around, 10 airbags, extrememely good radio, and it will cost you about 21k. It has 10 year 100k warranty. Quality and fit and finish are excellent. Car has a finished look and feel.
Real question is would I buy one for my own use: Absolutely!!!!!

Wife and I rented a car when we flew back to Iowa to see family and friends, we sat in the Charger and hated it. But since you like it can't help you there.

Sat in a Toyota Camry. Very impressed. Took it and was even more impressed. Averaged 32 mpg.

My Dad has a Chevy Impala. I've drove it. Nice, but the Toyota Camry was still better.

We have a Toyota Matrix, but it's a 1.8 liter 4 banger and if you want a V-6 you can get one, but our little 4 banger is very preppy and it's averaging 35 mpg. The only complaint is it needs a little more insulation. On rough roads we get road noise in the interior.

Not trying to be a smart alec here, but if it were me I'd approach this from a totally different angle. Instead of looking at what YOU like, ask the DW. Everything in your question points to you looking for what you'd be interested in.

There is much wisdom in this post. The golden rule applies in this situation. Never pick out a vehicle for you spouse as these are highly personal items and it only matters what your spouse wants, not what you think they want. I've learned this the hard way, a couple of times.

Agreed - when our Tahoe lease came up they wanted $23,000 it was 4 years old with 50k on it. DW and I spent all day at the dealer having HER drive EVERY car on the lot. She picked the Chevy Traverse. She LOVES this vehicle, it gets 18.5 MPG average mix of driving has a great warranty and seats 7. It is AWD and drives like a car but has the same amount of room our old Tahoe had. We got it for $29,900

You can't get a V6 in the Toyota Matrix...your choice a 1.8 or a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder.
