Hi,
What I do is put 1 pound of split peas, 1/2 pound of lentils, and 1/2 onion chopped up, add a little ground pepper. With 3 quarts of water in a crock pot for about 4-5 hours. Then add some chopped up carrots at the last hour to soften them.
This way is OK, and is vegetarian, important for anyone with diabetes. Adding some chopped up ham, or making it with chicken broth will add some more flavor, but also add animal fats.
I skip the salt, it is not really needed, and can be added at the table if desired.
Good Luck,
Fred.

I love the Progresso Split Pea with Ham. I have made it with a ham bone before in a crock pot.

Hi Fred!
I like the idea of adding Lentils to the mix, DW has a 'Thing' for that bean...
