I have my computer running XP Pro set to automatically load security updates. This has never been a problem before but now there is a critical update that will not load. I have even tried a manual update and still no success. Virus, adware and check disk scans show no obvious reasons why the update won't load. The updates are set to load at 3AM when no other programs are running so as not to cause a conflict. I checked the error log but don't see anything out of the ordinary. Any thoughts?

It's possibly this, esp. if it's an older computer

When mine downloaded the updates, it wiped out all of my sound. This was on a 2 year old computer with a new hard drive now running on xp pro instead of vista.

What is the description of the update that won't install? I have my downloads occur automatically but select when and what to install. Recently on two of my computers Windows Update could not install a security update. In both cases I discovered it was for Windows SQL Server 2000 which I do not have on either machine. The next time I reviewed the updates I simply unchecked the one for SQL Server and told it not to remind me again. Maybe you are hitting the same thing.

The update that won't load is KB953297. I am running XP Pro, SP3 and I have never reinstalled or changed the initial installation of windows except to load the security updates. I only install the high priority updates and this is the first time that it has been an issue.

It looks like you are having a problem doing an update to the .NET NetFramework product and apparently you are not alone. MS indicates you should delete .NET and reinstall all releases but this seems kind of silly. I would ignore it for now and see if they don't release a fix soon. You can always restore hidden updates by using Start->All Programs->Windows Update and in the left pane click Restore hidden updates. You can also review your update history there.
