Our Fridge/freezer in our Taylor Coach is 3 way (this trailer is new to us but used) and wonder if I can stock it before leaving on a camping trip and maintain the cold safely. We have concerns leaving propane on while travelling, wondering if battery can keep it cold and if we stop for lunch it will not drain our van's battery. Does anyone travel with food in their trailer?

Everyone travels with food in their refer. You'll get lots of answers on this one, but my way is keep the propane on, don't use 12v-it'll really drain your battery when you stop. I've traveled for prob 20 yrs with at least 4 rv's, always left the propane on, never had a problem. Most units nowadays don't seem to be 3 way, just propane or 115v. Some people just leave it off completely while on the move, figuring it'll stay cold enough with the door closed.

Most people including us travel with the refrigerator running on propane. We have been doing it for 18 years and never had a problem.

When we had our pop-up, I used to use the 115v to get the fridge cold the night before our trip. On the road, I'd run it on 12v and if we ever stopped, I'd just open the access door and turn it off while we were away. It did just fine. I also never had a problem running it on propane, but you have to remember that most tunnels and ferries require you turn off all propane appliances and close the bottles.

We are in the TC family and travel usualy 3 - 6 weeks at a time and have the propane on all the time with a few exceptions, when we fuel (gasoline) and when we pull into to have our propane tanks (2) filled up @ end of trip. That way when we decide to head out that part is ready to go and sometines when the power goes out (at the house) we can still stay warm and cook meals by just going out to the camper. JMHO

If your fridge is equipped to operate on 12 volt power (usually very small ones) then that would probably be a GOOD choice for a means of KEEPING it cold while traveling. IN most instances it is NOT a viable means of actually GETTING it cold however. It is preferred while traveling because most of the three way fridges do NOT have DSI ignition system and keeping a pilot light model lit while traveling can be very difficult. Once DSI because a popular means of lighting the burner it allowed for LP use to become the preferred method. As for the safety issue of running LP systems, if they're not safe for use in an unoccupied trailer while going down the road how would I ever get to sleep at night with it running?

Since we have power at the storage facility, we run the fridge on AC a day or two before we leave. Then I turn on the propane just before we leave and stock the fridge. With the fridge in Auto, it runs on propane when we disconnect and on AC when we connect. Stays that way the whole trip.
