Hi everyone
I just read a story in our paper that a cat in Iowa contracted H1N1 from his owners who were sick. The cat survived. Also a ferret in Oregon had H1N1.
Is anyone concerned that there pets could get sick. They said we could pass it on to them and to take the same precautions with our pets if we are not feeling well as we would our children.
Has anyone heard anything about this?

No more so than normally. We will continue to monitor their health, will provide supportive care when needed, and will take to vet when appropriate. I see no need to panic or raise our level of concern due to H1N1 or H3N8.

Below is a link to the AVMA press release:

AVMA- H1N1

There have been many discussions over the last 24 hours after this press release. Most infectious disease vets are not alarmed, and not suprised. Many theorized that the cat probably can't infect people, show mild disease if they get infected at all. Some are suspect about the testing and results.

Don't panic!!! This is a far greater risk to humans than animals.

Do the same precautions, wash your hands. If you notice any upper respiratory signs in your cats, take them to your vet. The AVMA has started a nation wide reporting data base to evaluate the situation.

My friends daughter is 8 weeks pregnant. She is so sick with morning sickness that she's been on a 24 hr. IV for the past two weeks and is bed ridden. Her doctor doesn't have the H1N1 shot for her, but there giving out free shots at a clinic with a 3 1/2 hour wait. It doesn't make since to me why doctors don't have the serum for their patience.

I do not want to start a panic blog I was just wandering if in the US you heard any thing about H1N1 and pets. It was just because I read the story this morning and we are always so behind in things up here. I am asmatic and cant get the shot because I am not in a high risk category right now. Only First Nations people, pregnant women, kids under 5 are getting the shot after huge lineups showed up in the first 2 days the clinic were open. Funny isnt it this flu is suppose to attack the rispritory of those that get it so you would think we would be on the first list. Oh well thats life I guess.
Also thank you to the moderator for the link.

H1N1 has already demonstrated a propensity for crossing from one species to another (that's how it got into the human population) and if it's crossing that easily it could easily mutate while doing so and become more virulent at some point. Nothing to take lightly but nothing to panic over either. So far it's proven to be no more dangerous than seasonal flu but the danger seems to be directed at a slightly different demographic than normal. It's VERY unusual any more for me to NOT be in a high risk group for ANYTHING. I don't know whether to be elated or terrified

Exactly! My wife is 8 months pregnant and her doctor's have not been given any shots to give the pregnant women who are at the top of the list for needing the H1N1 shot first. But yet the San Diego public clinics have been give them. So my wife went to get one at the clinic as her doctors suggested she do so. Because she was pregnant she got moved up in line and did not have to wait the 1 1/2 hours it was taking to get threw the line.

Without trying to get to political on everyone; If you are for Government controlled medicine, then you are seeing just the tip of what it will be like. If our Government decides they know what is best for us, and if this bill passes we will all be standing in lines to see a doctor.

Please explain why our jailed prisoners are getting the H1N1 vaccine before the highest risk general population, pregnant women and children are? We already are guaranteeing them 3 meals a day and a place to rest their head on our dime. Now we have to make sure they are healthier then you and I!

Having kids and knowing about serious side effects that can occur from time to time it is hard to know what to do. If it is in swine, turkeys and cats now I read yesterday it is every where. Trying to stay healthy works best for all diease prevention I have be told. I am just glad I do not have any plane trips planned until spring.

Kids under 9 have to have two shots to be protected against H1N1 they said the other day four weeks after the first one to be really protected so if finding one is hard then maybe two will be twice as hard.
