If you are in Austin now and have no need to go through or around San Antonio then I would take US 183 south to Lockhart, Luling, Gonzales, Cuero, Goliad, and Refugio. Good highway all the way.

At Refugio turn left on State 774. About 20 miles east of Refugio 774 will intersect with State Highway 35, take a right. It will be about 20 miles to Rockport. Much more interesting route.

Probably not as bad as the Austin debacle, but there is some construction.
Your best bet is to follow the suggestions above. That is if you're still in the Austin area.

OR just take the east loop of the Anderson loop (1406) and miss 99% of San Antonio all together and still take the Interstate.

Is the Anderson loop the same as the 410 loop around SA

My GPS routed me that way coming from Phoneix and headed to Louisiana. WOW!!!That is certainly an improvement from going through S.A.

No. 1604 is farther out that 410. I took the north side headed back east.

No it's a rural route, mostly 2 lane road with almost no traffic and few stop lights. In general the speed limit is 60 MPH for most of the loop. I'm told in a PM that I have the number wrong and that it is actually 1604. Sorry about the number as my memory just let me down but it is referred to as "The Anderson Loop". I'd suggest avoiding the WEST side of the loop as it goes through a LOT ofl small communities with high traffic and lots of stop lights but the east side of the loop is wide open and is an easy "go around" for San Antonio.
