I just returned from 3 restful days at Laguna campground, a USFS camp in Laguna Mountain Recreation Area in San Diego County, 64 miles from home. Camp elevation is near 6000 feet. It was warm in the daytime, chilly at night. It's wonderful to be mostly retired so I can camp midweek when the place is nearly deserted.
fall color in the campground, Kellogg oaks, quercus kelloggii

My camp neighbors, a family of about 8 acorn woodpeckers, were sure noisy. Here's part of the family in a rare quiet moment.

This snake was spotted in the closed portion of the campground. It was about 3.5 to 4 feet long.

Looking from camp across Little Laguna (dry) Lake.

View of part of Anza Borrego Desert State Park from near the campground entrance. Highest point on the far ridge, near the left, is Toro Peak.

It is definitely cool to take advantage of the spots near to home - especially during the season when people begin to park their campers for the winter. That may not happen quite as early out there, but still, I bet things start really opening up this time of year even out there.
Nice photos!

Whazoo, I don't speak to snakes. The only reasons I got close enough to this one to photograph it were that (1) I was too busy looking at the red tailed hawk in the tree above it to be alert to looking at the ground (dumb!) and (2) when I did see the snake I realized that it was not a rattler.
Do you know what kind of snake it is? I was going to ask my brother-in-law, but you'll do for now.

Will you please tell us where this campground is? We live in SD County also and this looks like a nice place. We mainly do boondocking so services are not necessary.
Thanks, Evelyn

Yes Sir, that is a Bull Snake, commonly called a gopher snake because it likes gopher holes to...hole up in. It will also hiss a bit sometimes as well as shaking it's tail, make that vibrate, in dry leaves and such to make itself sound like a rattler. Now I never figured how the first Bull snake knew to do that, and make hissself more important, or badder. Seems it's a human trait also.
