Only one person mentioned anything about your question on protocol. When using the truck islands, always and I mean always, pull ahead from the pumps after you are done, so the next person can use the pumps as you go inside to pay. Never leave your rig setting at the pump or in front of the pump, while you shop or eat, as some RVers do. If you want to shop or eat, pull into a parking spot and then go in and settle up your bill, plus do whatever else you want. Truckers don't appreciate anyone who blocks a fuel lane while they peruse the store, be it an RVer or another trucker.

Be very careful about the color of the diesel fuel handle. In some locations the diesel fuel filler will be green, and in other places the diesel color is yellow.
Last summer we were fueling up beside a brand new DP where the owner had filled it with gas by mistake. He had to wait for a truck to come and pump his tank empty and pay a disposal fee on 150 gallons of fuel.

Do NOT open both fuel caps if your Rig has one common tank. The fueling station is seldom totally level side to side and as mentioned above, a large amount of fuel can and will pump out the low side as the high side nozzle continues to run. We almost always use the truck pumps for the following reasons: EASy in/out, plenty of lanes, long windshield brushes and big buckets of wash fluid present, fast pumps, truckers move forward and out of your way every time.

What about other TRUCKERS that block the pumps? I pulled into a FJ once..that had 5 islands. Four had trucks in them...no driver around anywhere and behind each of them were other rigs..sitting...with no drivers in them EITHER???

In addition to rubber gloves and a paper towell I use the hospital booties to go over my shoes. You will be amazed how dirty they get. No reason to track the smelly stuff inside onto the carpet. Yep I know I look like a snob but it is my home and no sense in tracking in the diesel. The wife appreciates it too.

Regarding opening the "other" fuel filler. I would wonder if that would not negatively effect the auto shut off on the input system. I don't know how they work but, having the other input open sure will change the pressure dynamics in the tank. Hopefully there will be someone along that knows how those filler cutoffs work and can pass that knowledge on and at the same time deal with what I am suspicious of.

I too use the truck lanes, usually at Flying J as I like getting the cash price with my credit card and their RV "frequent fueler" card.
I keep an old pair of loafers near the door that I put on when outside at the fuel station. I also use gloves when fueling.
The advice about pulling ahead after fueling, and then going in to pay is good.
