We are just starting out in our new Travler Trailer..
We have two dogs...mini Poodle and Bichon Frise. We notice many people do travel with their pets. My question is when you have to
leave to eat out or sightsee etc...how long do you stay away
with the dogs in trailer? My dogs are very good together at home when we are away...never more than 5 hours. I would appreciate any input on experiences in this area.

Why would it be any difference than at home? Whatever you do for the dogs when left alone at home, do the same in the trailer. The trailer will be their home.

My husband and I started traveling in 2005 with two Maltese. We had concerned about leaving them while we went sight seeing, eating, ect. But very quickly found out they did just fine, however we never left them for long (not more than 5 hours).

We did find out that many places would allow us to bring our "babies" in as long as we had them on a lease or carried them.

Happy Traveling!!

on several occasions, we have left our 2 inside up to 6 hrs. They are inside the house during the week up to 8 hrs when we are at work and school. We never had a problem. We usually leave the radio on for some noise and leave them some water, they usually just sleep. I have talked to many camping neighbors and they didn't even know we had dogs in the TT. I will leave a small note on the window stating we have 2 dogs inside and leave my cell phone # should there be a problem. Well, now we have 3 dogs...I dont think it will work now, threes a crowd...

We barely even leave our 2 Brittany's alone at home for more than a couple hours. Same with when we are camping. They tend to get separation anxiety. Plus, we always want to be careful about power for AC and other things in campgrounds. And now, we even have parakeet that travels with us.

We leave ours for up to 4 hours inside the trailer and they do fine...
UNLESS it's really hot and we are depending on the A/C.

We don't trust that the power won't go out and we refuse to take the chance so we either take them with us, make other arrangements like a local kennel or we change our plans and stay at the campground.

Hello Caroline! Welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy your adventures with your trailer and pets as much as we do!

We leave our three dogs (one Maltese mix and two Lhasa Apsos) in the trailer for a few hours at a time while we are fishing or sight seeing. Since it is our home away from home they do just as well as they would at home and we leave them inside here up to 8 hours at times.

We do make a few concessions for their comfort. We have two fantastic fans in our trailer so during hot weather we set the thermostat for those at 5 degrees above the AC, with one blowing in and the other blowing out. Since the fans work on 12 volt power if by chance there was a power outage (has never happened but could) the fans would come on and keep the trailer cool. Just like at home we leave the radio on (again it works on 12 volt power) and that keeps them quiet and happy.

Just be sure you take the time to make positively sure they do NOT bark. We trained our GSD's that it was NEVER ok to bark inside trailer. Worked great.

So try it at home. Walk away, drive away, sneak back and listen.

Try same at a campground. Then each time you go, ask nearby RVer to call you on cell if dogs bark AT ALL. If they do, come back and resume training.

Once trained, no problem. We have left our GSD in our HTTTH all day with no issues.

The post about leaving a note on the window with your cell# is a good idea.
I also printed some cards with our name and cell phone#, and a note that we are staying in __________RV park and we have a dog inside. We carry one of these cards when we leave the RV for several hours. This is in case we have an accident, someone will know about our baby.

I think some of it depends upon how comfortable your dog is with the RV, and the campground. We stayed at one park in the National Forest in the Black Hills, and the poor dog was a basket case--so many unfamiliar scents and sounds. Now, after several years of RVing and a second dog, he's much more comfortable when we leave. We still try not to leave them alone for more than a couple of hours.

If you do want to take some time sightseeing, you can arrange doggie daycare or overnight care at a local vet's office or kennel, or make an appointment to have the dog groomed at a place where you can drop him off in the morning and pick up late in the afternoon.
