How can I determine if my 2005 Chevy gas 2500 HD has an Allison transmission and if it's a four or five speed? Is there a code for this info on the sticker in the glove box? Appreciate, in advance, your help - thank you.

Yes.

MT1 = 4L80-E 4-spd
M74 = Allison 5-spd
MW7 = Allison 6-spd

Your transmission is not an Allison. Allisons are only put in Diesel 2500 Hds. Yours is a 4 speed 4L80E I believe. There is a code in the Vin number that the dealer can tell you what trans is in the truck.

Unless he has a 8.1 then I believe an Alli was used

Incorrect. The 8.1 Gas engine also had the Allison option.

Incorrect again. There is nothing in the VIN that tells you the transmission.

Get a dealer to run the VIN. That can tell you everything your truck came with.

Thank you for all the comments, I'll check into those code #'s and also run the VIN thru the local Chevy dealer.

If you look at the transmission the Allison is obvious. It is 1/2 again as big as the others. It also has an external filter that is usually red located about center at the rear of the transmission. I am almost sure the only gas engine that had the Allison was the 8.1

My 01' 8.1 had the Allison. Don't believe the 6.0 Gasser ever came with the Allison, just the 8.1.

The 8.1 has an Allison and on the transmission on the drivers side will have a spin on external filter that can be red, white or black depending on the filter supplier.

If you have the allison and you change the filter, make sure that you don't throw away the magnet. Clean it and reuse it.
