Hi,
This will be our first year going south. We will be leaving
Saskatoon in January Our destination will be Las Vegas.
We are wanting to know how far do you make it the first day.
Where do you stay and how hard is it to keep the rig warm?
We are thinking the first day to drive to Great Falls, UT
second day to Salt lake city and on the last day a Short drive
to Vagas. Is this realistic or can we do it faster. I would
like to hear how you go.
Thanks for the input
Doug,

Your travel days will depend on weather conditions. Try to pick the clear days because the warm or cold temps do not make as much difference as the wet or snowing conditions. You will pass through a weather temperature transition at one point or another. If you hit this during clear weather then driving conditions will be a lot safer. If you hit the freeze/thaw transition during rain or snow then ice and slush are not safe to drive in. Pull over and wait it out.

We use Walmart for almost all our travelling overnight stops. Usually never alone, always some other RV there as well.

Easy driving days can be 4 to 8 hours so Great Falls, MT is an easy days drive, Salt Lake another easy drive but why push it when you don'e have too.

Good Luck in your travels.

When we used to leave in the winter months it would depend on the weather, if it was clear and no blowing snow and the highway dry I would continue to drive until tired, pull into a rest stop, sleep for 15 minutes or up to a couple of hours and continue. First day travel was usually Salt Lake, sleep for 6 hours or so and then to Mesquite NV and rest for a couple of days. If the weather turned to snow we would stop and wait it out. We always travel with food and a full tank of propane so we were prepared to wait as long as necessary. Just not worth it to drive on snow or icy roads. Seen to many units in the ditch after a storm.

How hard is it to keep the Motorhome worm inside??
Is the furnace able to keep up.
For a first stop in Great falls sounds good but I'm surprised
that there would be a campground open that time of year.

Besides getting away from the cold, what is the rush? I agree, Great Falls, Montana, at Dicks, then Pocatella, at Cowboy RV Park, and then Mesquite, Leeds, at West Zion or even Las Vegas. Coming from Calgary, mid October, we booked the first two parks, but it should not be necessary. Be prepared to lay up if the weather turns on you. We left our coach un-winterized. We kept both furnaces on at about 18 degrees, and ran a trouble lamp into the water bay next to the water pump. When on the road, especially further north and in the coldest part of the morning, we used the inverter to light the trouble lamp and keep the pump above freezing. While camped we put a thermostatic controlled 120 heater in the water bay and covered the outside water line with foam pipe insulation. Besides a few side trips to Indio, Quartsite and Hemet, we'll be laying up all winter in Yuma. ps Dick's and Cowboy RV Park have deep services and are open year round.
