This is our first trip south and we are leaving November 30th. We will be pulling a 5th wheel trailer and are not sure which is the best route to take to avoid any complications in our travel. We would appreciate help in planning our trip route. Hope to hear from someone soon.

This late in the year I'd go I-5. and hope no snow at the Or/Ca border.
Weather permitting on the east side Penticton, Reno via 395 and south.

I would go 97 all the way until Weed, CA and then take 5 down to Sac and 99 to Bakersfield and then 58 to Four Corners and 395 south to I-40 in Victorville. In what seem like you might be going the opposite direction I go west on 40 dropping down to Redlands and the cut over and take the 10 to Palm Springs. Its probably a couple miles longer but it will be quicker plus you are on the freeway. I have traveled the 97 in late Dec, early Jan and Mid-Jan. The 97 is a main route with lots of trucks plus its fairly flat. I have gone the 5 before from Washington and its a waste of time.
I did some quick checking on the i-5 route and if you take that cutting over to 5 at the Columbia river you add 112 miles to your trip. The "Google Map" doesnt take into account your not traveling 60+ but more like 50+ and your speed is more average going down 97 and over 58,
It might be a little quicker staying on the 5 to I-8 and San Diego and then driving to EC but I would just as soon travel through the high desert and forget about LA and SD and the traffic.

The mountains are getting lots of snow (pass level), the ski operations are opening earlier than ever in history... stick to I-5.

I-5 to 805 S to 52 E to 125 S to I-8 E will bypass some of San Diego. East of Alpine, rest area at Buckman Springs w dump station. Near the 4000' summit, Golden Acorn Casino 1/4 mile off 8 near Campo accomodates big rigs w parking, fuel and food. Pay attention to grade, wind and speed cautions dropping through Devil's Gorge to the desert floor. Sunbeam rest area west of El Centro, CA. Have a great, safe trip.

On the Sacramento to Bakersfield leg, I would recommend staying on the I-5. I tried 99 on the way north last spring for a change of scenery and it's nasty, nasty, bumpy by comparison. Southbound might be better, but that stretch is off my list 'til Arny finds some highway money.

I-40 ends in Barstow. From there to San Bernardino is I-15. Pick up I-10 east from San Bernardino and go south from Indio to El Centro.
