Definitely go and see PEI. I think it is worthwhile to go to
Charlottetown and see the musical Anne of Green Gables and visit Founders Hall.
Also if you go to Brudenell (a really nice park), check to see what is happening at the Playhouse in Georgetown. They get some good entertainment at very reasonable prices. There is always lots of entertainment around the province most nights of the week and the prices are so reasonable and lots of fun. If you enjoy bicycling, there is the Centennial Trail - paved in many areas - pick up a brochure on it.

Quote: Baddeck, 2 nights, Baddeck Cabot Trail campground
Sydney, 3 nights, Arm of gold campground
These campgrounds are approx 30 miles apart . I would stay maybe in baddeck a few nights and maybe louisbourg a night to see the fortress . arm of gold is more of an overnight place next to a major highway .

Everyone, thanks for comments so far! My original list is the places we are thinking about to set up 'base camp' from, eg. from Sydney we would do Fortress at Louisbourg. From comments it sounds like we may be better off to skip Sydney and stay nearer Louisbourg for a night or so.
As far as what we like to do, get out on the water, walk beaches, watch wildlife, time in the woods...(shopping, not so much) and no kids to keep entertained.
Little Kopit, we've spent time near the salt water before, spent time in about 40 states and last year spent 6 1/2 weeks in western Canada including Vancouver Island.
All, I think Newfoundland would be great but don't think we can do it justice this trip with just 4 weeks in the area.
Love this forum and the volume of experience available here. Keep the comments coming as you think of other things!

For your consideration, when we visited the Fortress back in June 08 we stayed at the Louisbourg RV Park for two nights. It's a small, not fancy campground right next to the harbor and within easy walking distance of activities in town. The Fortress is only 2-3 miles away.

There is also a Nova Scotia Provincial Camp Ground quite close to the Louisbourg Fortress.
Arm of Gold is more used by those taking the ferry to Newfoundland.
Re. your interests, definitely call the provincial tourism offices and get them to send you more pamphlets.
& getting the province's maps of their own ground is very important. Each province puts in things others don't include. PEI has icons to tell you the type of place. For example, I think you'd enjoy the 'scenic road' one. It usually means canopied with trees.
Even for this bit o' space 4 weeks is short.
& look at traveling to one way and going back another. Let's just toss a return route idea to you. Edmunston up rte 185 to rte 20. Down to Montreal, Up to Ottawa and rte 17, the Trans Canada Highway to Sault Ste. Marie, ON, & cross over into Michigan.
BTW I think when Clattertruck came to Newfoundland in 2005 I think that was their 'coming' route, if I remember correctly.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

That is correct. We had been on Madeline Island in Wisconsin and then traveled though Northern Michigan. We crossed at at the Soo and went though Eastern Canada. It was a great trip long remembered.

We returned home from the Maritimes two monthes ago. We did PEI and New Brunswick. Next year we plan to do Nova Scotia and the west end of PEI (which we didn't get to visit).
We spent 3 nights in Campobello at the Herring Cove Provincial Park ($22 per night with the Senior Discount)then took the Ferry to St. John's NB and on to PEI over the Confederation Bridge.
In PEI we stayed for 6 nights at Northumberland PP. Nice treed site.
After that to Fundy National Park. Hopewell Rocks are a must! and then on to Maine.
When we go this summer, we will stay at as many Provincial Parks as possible.
We found the National Park to be expensive; you paid for the site and then had to pay an additional daily entry fee of $6.80 per person so Fundy in effect cost us over $50 per night. Did not think it was worth it.
This year we plan to take the Ferry from NS to PEI at Wood Islands for the experience.
We had a blast-you will too.

My list of dittos from the above suggestions, plus a few of my own:
Campobello Island -- provincial park
Grand Manan Island
Lunenburg, NS
Meat Cove, extreme north end of Cape Breton
Whycogahmagh provincial park, NS
New River, pp, NB
Red Point, pp, PEI
Note: some of these are simply really nice places to stay while exploring area attractions, others are destinations in their own right.
