Would like to have information, pros/cons on the Chevrolet 4.8L V8 Engine -vs- the Chevrolet 6.0L V8 Engine.
Is the 6.0L better than the 4.8L, and why did RoadTrek go to the 4.8L, I do realize that the 4.8L is now the standard engine.
I understand that it is not a very powerful engine for a 1 ton van, is this so?

According to GM website, the 4.8L isn't available in 3500 van, only 6.0L.

Like so many other things in life, it's all about the money. Smaller engine, smaller price. Future headache and heartache.
I'm a fan of the 6.0. I have a 3.73 rear. That said, I pull a small trailer with a motorcycle in it. Using Tow/Haul, it rarely "hunts".
I'm liking what I use.
Cheers.

I had a 1500 in 2002 with a 4.8 in it and in my option its a worthless engine, at around 12,000 miles it started to get loud and the more miles I put on it the louder it got I traded it with 20,000 miles on it just to get rid of it and got my current truck with a 5.3 which has been a great engine.

But Roadtrek lists the 6.0L engine as an automotive option with the 190/210 units, and they are built on the 1-ton chassis.

I just looked at the Chevy and GMC sites. The Chevy one doesn't count as they are still only listing 2009 models. The GMC site was contradictory. In the specs section they said 4.8 only with AWD, but in the build it section, I built a two wheel drive 3500 with a 4.8.
I have heard many places the std engine will be the 4.8 for the Express 3500.

I just got a 2010 Explorer Conversion Van and it's on a Chevy 1500 Express it has the 5.3L engine with AWD and from what I was told, it was the only engine available with AWD, at least through Explorer Vans.

I've got the 364 ci (6.0) in my 05 RT 170 and it's wonderful. I can't imagine a 5.3 or 4.8 in this heavy vehicle (and it's only 3/4 ton). The General must be putting in smaller engines to meet EPA gas mileage standards for the fleet.

Tend to agree with the last post above. 6.0 is a good engine in my book and our 170 gets 17 mpg + on the road (less with typical at home driving). It has plenty of power. I was a fan of the Chysler Dodge 318 but the difference in mileage is in tenths and I sure like the extra power margin. i cannot speak to the smaller 4.8 but it must have substantially less power. If towing is ever a question, 6.0 is much better without question.
Maybe someone else can speak to the long haul issues...my odometer is still pretty low.

rolandandlinda, we do tow a 20' TT with our RT and the 364 does a better job of towing than our old 88 suburban with a 454. the 454 got 8 mpg, the 364 gets 10-12 towing, biiiiiig difference. Engine technology has come a long way since 88, but when moving heavy vehicles there is no substitute for cubic inches.
