While looking for my cover for my spare tire, it occurred to me that anyone could just walk up and take my spare in less than 5 minutes. Are there any spare tire covers that offer any security? Is this a needless concern?
Next question: Should I take a second spare on a long trip to the west from Tx in March?
As I am considering a trip to Ca from Tx I will probably come up with a lot of questions to pester everyone with. I am going to do at least 3 trips for long weekends to state/national parks as shakedowns before leaving.
I will do searches through the threads to try to avoid needless questions of everyone.
Thanks in advance.

I would get a lock for the spare. Some replace a lug nut on the spare tire mount with a keyed lug nut. Available at many tire stores that sell fancy rims.
I would not carry an additional spare tire. There is tire stores here in the west!

I guess some people do carry a spare spare tire but in several hundred thousand miles trough 49 states I've only needed my ONE spare tire twice. Seems like a big waste of space. Putting a chain and pad lock would secure a tire against theft but again, I don't think I've even HEARD of one being stolen other than from a storage yard. Good luck / skip

As Chuck said, you may not even need the first spare, so if space is at a premium, you could likely get away with only one. For me, though, I like having an extra spare tire. I've had to replace tires (great quality ones...NOT!) four times in the past 6 years. With that kind of luck I'm happy to make room for a spare spare.

In 20 years of camping I have never had a spare tire stolen from the back of a camper and I have never seen a reason to carry more than one spare. I check the tires before I leave on any long trip and if they look bad I replace them before I leave then I don’t worry about a spare. We are planning a trip to Death Valley in the spring which will be over 4000 miles round trip and I am only taking one spare and last year alone we put 4200 miles on the trailer tires and had no problems.

we did a trip from MI to SD this summer. When I had my TT tires swapped out year before last, I kept the best tire of the old ones..
Along with my normal spare , I carried this tire with us, just in case..
I have found that it is very hard to find e-rated 15 inch ST tires, in my case and wanted to have something, in case I blew two..
Didn't need it, but didn't have to worry either...

PS as for locking the spare, it will keep the honest thief away... what holds your spare tire carrier to the bumper??? best way might be a bike cable lock.. Mine is suspended under the a-frame and I do not lock it...

Only carry one spare for the TV, only carry one spare for the TT... Recently back from 9500 mile trip and never had the cover off the spare. The only trip I might consider a second spare for...PA home to Alaska Those spares weigh a ton...lots of stuff to take besides one more extra heavy item. I've never locked a spare to the vehicle. Odds were if I needed it, I'd have lost the key.

Thanks for the input. The only reason I asked was because I have had 3 trailer blowouts since I have had my trailer.

I have made the trip from Texas to CA several times (to visit with mom) and I have not had any tire issues with my PU. Have not made the trip with my TT but I am not concerned about the tires. I monitor the amount of miles on the tires as will as checking the tire pressures. I learned my lesson concerning the proper air pressures and have not had any more tire problems.

Bike lock chain/cable thru the rim and around the bumper will take care of locking it, if you feel the need.
