Wondering if this Yamaha EF2400iS will run a new 13,500 a/c unit. It states it has a surge up to 3000 watts, so I was wondering if anybody has real experience with this gen. I'm trying to find the smallest unit I can get that will run a/c during the summer without having to buy 2 of the honda 2000 gens that are rated at 1600 each.

I was looking at that one also NORCALer and of course wondered the same thing, so I will just sit back and see what the Yamaha owners have to say! :-)

It also says that it will run at 2400 Watts for 20 minutes....with only 2000 Watts continuous....which is probably more in line with what you plan to do.
It should run the A/C, but that is about it....you are basically talking about a 13A A/C unit being plugged into a 15A outlet (genset)....or, you would get by with about 1800Watts....so you should be OK
Don't expect to use the Microwave or other 120VAC equipment at the same time.

Don't have one, so it will be interesting to see if the genset actually lives up to the "math" that says it should work???

Go down to tech issues and post this or I am sure it will be moved. All kinds of talk about this down there. Some say it will others say it won't start it.

Oh crap!!! I didn't know there was a whole new world out there. I only come to the travel trailer forum. Thanks for the help! I just knew I was breaking some rule and being bad today!

Hi NORCALer,

The answer is a firm *maybe*. It depends on the individual air conditioner. It may be better to consider a 2800 watt Kipor, Yamaha, or Honda.

I have this generator and it would not run the 13.5K Coleman Mach A/C that came with my 2010 Jayco. Trying to start the A/C would send the generator into overload. I added a Supco hard-start capacitor to the A/C and now the generator runs it fine. I did not realize that the generator was only rated to run at 2400 Watts for 20mins, as posted above. Can someone elaborate on this? Does it result in engine overheating, premature wear, or what?

A little different rig but pretty close. I run a EF2800i Yamaha. I have a 15,000btu A/C. It will run the A/C and the rest of the trailer with the refer and water heater on propane. I do turn off the A/C when running the microwave. I also run a Magnum 2012 Inverter with the 100amp charger but my gen will not run the A/C and the charger turned up at the same time.
The EF2400i should run a 13,500btu without much problem but if the trailer is equiped with the newer converter with the 3 stage charger, it may be the converter is pulling enough that the A/C won't turn over. Try turning the converter off and see if the gen will run the A/C.

Just a thought.

Sailbad,

You bring up a very good point...Thanks for the help! I'll check on the converter and see what I have and what it takes to run it in conjunction with the a/c and some overhead lights.
