I am considering the purchase of a 39 foot Teton.

What are typical campground (State, Federal and Private) length limits?
And/or from what percentage of campgrounds would this be disallowed.
I would like to boondock in places like BLM land as well.

Tried running arkansas' magazine mountain, but the tow limit was 24'. had to turn and run around. some of the local parks had signs that also prevented us from pulling in. But there were others in the area. Near diamond crater sp, Daisy had just a few sites for Big rigs but they took us in on short notice. has not been a real problem. good luck!

A lot of it depends on the state. We haven't had too much trouble with our 36' but there were some places we would have liked to have gone but didn't because of size AND road conditions... We also haven't gone back east yet either.

They are all over the map. The older the CG, the more likely a 39 is to be too long. Best bet is to use a guide ahead of time. Some facilities that have a length limit enforce it on only even-numbered days. Or maybe bad hair days. Not sure what, exactly, but it is inconsistent.

Some CGs have overall length restrictions, as well, since the roads are twisty.

Ground clearance and overhang are more likely to be issues than length.

*Most* private RV parks will probably not be a problem (but check ahead of time). State parks *might* not be a problem...depends on the park (check ahead of time). BLM land will most likely not be a problem except, in some cases, for access. National park and USFS campgrounds will be more of a problem.

We fulltime in a 32' fifth wheel and do a lot of boondocking. Even at 32', there are places we can't get into because we're too long.

My last combination was 54ft overall. I never had not to go anywhere I wanted because of the length. We booddock camp 100%.

The worst area was where I had taken the wrong road and had to back the trailer up over a cliff edge, block the wheels, disconnect the trailer, go turn my truck around, then reconnect the trailer too make a 180º turn around.

So it took me 1/2hr too turn around. No big deal. I sure would have missed some pretty back country if I hadn't gone.

At the end of the day the fact is the larger you go,the more you are limited. The reasons we are limited are not important. This year we went from a 26' class A motorhome to a 27' TT with a TV. We debated how much we wanted to give up access to the smaller parks. I'm not sure if we made the right choice yet. We have had this rig out twice now. Both places had a 35' restriction for TT's. One mountain campground I had to be selective as to which site I chose. The old MH would have slipped into most sites with ease. Now I have to think it out a bit before I commit myself. ...RVH

The National Forest visitor maps and web sites almost always have a chart that lists the campgrounds and the max trailer length. I have found to take those numbers with a healthy dose of skepticism. In most cases you can get a longer rig in there easily (but not always). Park on the road outside the campground, get out, and take a walk around the sites. Chances are you can get your 39' into some of them. Check the parking pad length, overhead branches, road dips, and any tight corners on the campground roads.

The campgrounds are periodically refurbished and updated. The original specs and limits from 30 years ago do not always get changed in the brochures.

If you are boondocking then the only limits are what your rig and your skill level can handle.
