Before you go Call your Dept of Motor Vehicles in Alabama and ask them what it would take to register a po up with a Florida Registration and Title. And Look over that title very closely and match the Vin # on the trailer to the title. You need to be sure that the title is legitimate and signed by the owner and that the trailer vin matches the title and has not been altered.
A word to the wise, if you fear it might be a stolen trailer walk away and call the police. If you buy it and get it registered in your name and down the road it is discovered that it is a stolen vehicle it goes back to the true owner. Doens't matter how much you spent for it or fixed it up, the original owner or their insurance company get the vehicle back.

I would
1/ ask him to see his ID (IE Drivers License)
2. Check the title & go to the Courthouse to register it together.
If he refuses RUN do not Walk away!

I'll keep it short! Cross the T's , dot the I's at least twice!!! I'm speaking from experience! Bought my Starcraft from local Police Captain, mistake #1!!!! First it was "no title needed because of the weight", CT. has a 3000# cut off on titles. Payment was made and then "Oh by the way" seems the camper was over 3000# AND the title was held by a bank in MD!!!!!!! It was like making baby elephants but 11 weeks later the title was in hand. Seems like my boy sold the camper for less the he owed and needed time to sell one of his cars to pay of the bank!!!!!!!!!! TRUST NO ONE!!!!!!!!!
Hope to see you on the road!!!

I joke to my family about living under a black cloud because typically if anything can go wrong it usually does to me. This time, however, everything went through without a hitch. I spoke to the owner a couple more times before the deal, had all his ID information (never hesitated to give it to me) which matched to the title information (his was the only name on the title), home address which matched to information I had already googled and located using online resources. The title and trailer VIN #'s matched.
As to making the deal in a parking lot, it was strictly convenience for both of us. He lives in a subdivision with narrow streets and little parking for us to make the exchange and I was driving 50 miles to meet him. I also decided that if it needed anything to be towed safely for the trip back home, I was in a Walmart parking lot with access to most anything I would need. Sometimes things just work out.
By the way, I consulted this forum from the very beginning of negotiating a fair price, what to look for, stay away from (yes, I knew it was from Florida and to check for flood/water damage) and everyone was so helpful. I can't wait to take my new toy out. My first big trip will be in March for a shuttle launch. Until then, I'm sure I'll have more questions.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge & experience with me.

Thanks for the update.... probably 99% of the private transactions take place just like yours did. But there is always the 1% that are screwy.

Awesome. And your inaugural trip is to watch a shuttle launch? That's cool.
Been mulling over going to see a launch with the kids this coming summer if I get the chance.
Glad your deal was smooth, and I'm sure you'll love it. Where's the pics?
