I just winterized this morning because of some below freezing temps. I'll still be using the camper about once or twice a month throughout the winter.
If my black tank was about 1/4 or 1/2 full, I was wondering if you could just drop in some salt (the type for sidewalks) to prevent freezing instead of emptying it? I'm not sure if the salt will damage the seals or not. Has anyone tried this method?

Two problems: it would take a large amount of salt to do any good and when standing salt water freezes it pushes the salt out and forms pure water ice at 32F.

I would contact your manufacturer!
I would think the salt would pit the tank no matter how much liquid you put in.
You see what it does to your under carrage!

WalMart & a lot of boating supply places, sell antifreeze made for holding tanks. It's pretty cheap. Would be a better choice then salt.

Don't use salt. As others suggested, just use the pink anti-freeze for RVs. It won't take much unless it gets really cold, then a little more might be needed. It's cheap, easy and won't harm anything.

I don't believe the valves would really like salt very much.

I hear there's icebergs in the ocean, which is salty, so I would say no, salt won't help you any. Might cause your dog to wanna drink the toilet water more than he does already though. Dogs love salty stuff.
