Hi all. I've a 2006 Class'A' on the Ford F-53 chassis. It has the 362 HP V-10 engine w/5 speed Tranny. I've noticed that the RPM's on the TACometer drifts UP & Down about 25 RPM at Idle centered about 600 RPM. If I increase the RPM, with gas pedal, to 1100 RPM it varies about 50 RPM. Is something going bad? I don't experience anything abnormal while driving.

Hi,

There is probably a stepper motor inside the tachometer, and it is trying to decide "Point to the 600 or point to the 625?" and keeps changing it's mind, while the actual engine rpm is somewhere between 595 and 618 RPM's.

Basically the same thing happening at 1100 RPM.

Nothing to really worry about. You did not mention the engine feeling like it is surging faster and slower. This might indicate a vacuum leak, or any number of other things. Air sensor not working right, or drastic change in altitude that the electronic controls have not gotten used to yet.

Do you have any other engine codes? If running rough, it can be a failed coil or wire, but that is not indicated by anything you said today. Each of your cylinders has it's own coil and wire to the spark plug, no distributor anymore.

I have the same year same engine. My idle is smooth. Just checking, but is your air filter clean and all?

Did you put a new filter in? I would check the filter housing and all the connections for your air supply. Mine did that when The tube from the top of the air filter came off.

Filters are fairly new & still clean. Yes, I also hear the engine RPM vary slightly along with the TACH movement. I'm at sea level, idling at my home in Miami, Fl. so no altitude situations. Have no 'Codes'. Otherwise, the engine runs fine. ???

In our 1999 V-10 the exhaust gas circulator valve malfunctioned under warranty. The design was at fault and Ford improved it.

Codes should tell why it is surging.

Again...I see the RPM varying on the TACH & HEAR the engine changing along with it. The variation rate is about 3 seconds per cycle.
