Because families have SUV's, or a truck already. For weekend camping it's what makes the most sense. A motorhome would mean another vehicle that needs to be licensed and insured and maintained, not to mention the high payments if your not wealthy enough to pay cash.

My wife & I are in our mid 30's and are in our 2nd motorhome. The coach is great with kids. Plenty of room for them to entertain themselves on long trips, no bathroom brakes, etc.
I think like many who have posted before me that cost could be a factor in the choice of many younger families. From the cost of the unit to insuring the unit.

it's the money, first. but it's also the lifestyle or type of "camping".
some of the younger set want to do a lot of ATV stuff and so they go places where they can do that, places a MH can't or shouldn't go.
MHs cannot travel on a lot of the narrow forest service roads.

Cost and frequency of use. If DW and I were only occasional weekenders, there's no way we would have shelled out the cash for our DP. We live in it from April to November, so we bought something we'd be comfortable in for that length of time. For 2 - 3 weekends per month, a TT would have done us just fine.
That being said, to each, his own! We've met folks who fulltime in truck campers & conversion vans, who are perfectly happy and comfortable with them! Personally, I couldn't do it... I admire them because they have so much more flexibility that we do with the big road hog! ;-)

We debated this subject a long time. We prefer the 5th wheel or travel trailer. The Class A is cost prohibitive for sure and the fact that you can use you tow vehicle for other uses around the sticks and bricks is helpful. A class A is a lovely purchase if you have the money but most nowadays are more glitzy and I for one am not sure I would like small children rough housing in mine if I owned it, on a rainy day!

We've had our class C since our sone was about 1; he's 8 now. If I had the truck, a trailer would have been a no-brainer. But I don't need a truck as a daily commuter and we love trips the MH.

Often us older folks don't still have kids, mortgages, etc. in the budget. (hopefully)
BUT - you left out the cost (purchase and maintenance) of the towing vehicle. Just 'downsized from truck/fifthwheel combo to a MH. Gas mileage is about the same.

Motorhomes are pretty much a simple setup even though they are very complex machines. Much more costly though.
Travel trailers are much cheaper. Plus if TV gets old it can be replaced.
If either the TT or TV has a problem it can be left somewhere while repairs are made. Its tough to do that with a MH

Our decision was due to cost. We always have a need for a heavy duty vehicle such as a pickup or suburban which would also tow the TT.
So cost wise the TT was the best choice. And we ended up with more living space than a comparable length MH.
