looking at upgrading my 04 CRF250R & going w/more of a trail-off road/street legal bike, so need opinions, facts etc about which one is better. Both new and used (used being 2008 or newer). New I would say Yamaha because the WR450F is FI. Honda doesn't offer this option in their X models. I've never ridden Yamaha but from what I read they seam to be a pretty reliable bike. I've read that Honda's had valve problems. My 04 would confirm this but do the 2008's & newer have valve problems? any pics are appreciated.

Keep a clean air filter and you will not have any valve problems on the CRF. I run a Twin Air with a filter skin. I adjusted the valves at the first service and have not adjusted them since. I check them every 500 miles and have over 180 hours on the hour meter.

Honda CRF450X or Yamaha WR450F Well both of these bike on dogs on throttle response do to the EPA reg's not unless you rip off all the emissions garb. The WR450F is really a piece of cr*p stock and the CRF450X is a little better. Then you'll half to go through all the DMV stuff about getting it plated. As mention here KTM' are a great dual sport too! But pricy, You'll still need to adjust the valves on the CRF450X but not as much on the WR450F. So what kind of rider are you? How many year have you been riding street or dirt?

I don't know if the Honda 450 is the same as the 250. I curse my wife's 250 when I change her oil, because it takes twice as long (separate engine oil and tranny oil). The maintenance on my WR450 seems a lot simpler.

I'm already biased towards the WR, but the thought of getting the EFI would sell me.

If you are going to buy one of these bikes, then purchase a dual sport kit and install it, you might as well just get the KTM to start with. It is faster and lighter than those two with the lights and mirrors on it. The new online version of Cycle News just did a review of it. Here is the link.

I would vote for orange as well....but you didn't ask that.

Between blue and red I would go blue, the WR is just a much more reliable machine, you have a honda and know first hand what the top ends are like. The Yamaha is pretty bullet proof in comparison. I will say that both will be better than your 250 just because you will not be reving it as high, as often, you will be able to live in the lower end of the rpm range so it will last longer.

And as one of my kids said many years ago, "Boys ride blue bikes and girls ride those pink (red) bikes." That's how it worked out in our family anyway: my son and I ride Yamahas and my wife and daughters ride Hondas.

Assuming you are doing this in Montana because it can't be done anymore here in CA (dirt to street, too many CARB regulations).

I'd vote the Yamaha as well, in my personal experience they require less maintenance per mile to keep running. They are also very easy to remove the de-tuning that is done to keep them eligible for green sticker / street licensing.

2003 CRF450R = rebuild every year including valves, sold in 2008.
2005 YFZ450R = never rebuilt, 7 seasons of 4 trips per (Glamis)
2007 YZ450R = never rebuilt, over 800 hours of riding at 17+ trips per year.

If you take any motor preference out of the equation they are both nice bikes with good trail manners.

Don't take life too seriously, it's not permanent.
