Wow. I had a 23' Rockwood for a couple of years, 3300 lb. dry. Used an Equal-i-zer hitch, and needed it. Tongue weight was the killer, it bent one of the rear leaf springs so I had to get it re-curved and then added "2000 lb. overload" helper leafs. I bet your TT tongue will be over 700 lbs. once you add LP and stuff. Don't forget that the weight of the WD hitch adds to the weight of the TT tongue, so that's about 800 lbs. and probably well over the rating. Do what you must, but my Mountaineer (Explorer twin) had the old 5L pushrod V8 and I still would not want to tow your TT with it.

I also had a Mountaineer with a 5L and was pulling a 21ft Travelstar. I killed the transmission.

You need a WDH. Heck, I had one for my popup with about 350 pounds on the ball. On a hybrid like yours and minimal tow vehicle a Equalizer(tm) is a good investment. My '02 Explorer with the 4.0 V6 pulled our Roo 23SS (about 5000 pounds) for two seasons. Not happy with it in this use so we replaced the Explorer with an Expedition. Both with the HD Tow package ($350 sticker option).

Thanks for all the response and help. We will give it a go for a couple short trips, if I'm uncomfortable I'll need to move to a 1/2 ton truck.

Thanks again, looking forward to enjoying this forum!!

Jim, do you have a WDH? you mentioned bars but not whether they were connected to a WDH.

I'm confused.....we have the Equalizer, therefore 2 sway bars. Don't all WDHs have 2 bars??

Just because you have 2 bars, does not mean they are sway bars. WDH have 2 spring bars, a WDH with sway control also has 2 bars. Yyou need to find out what kind of WDH setup you have. you may, or may not have sway control.

the OP mentions weight distribution bars and adding a anti-sway bar.
so, it doesn't sound like he has an Equal-i-zer, since it has built-in sway control.
he must have a chain-style WDH, since he mentions adding the sway bar.
but he only mentions the bars and not the hitch head, nor the chains.

I have the weight distribution bars with the receiver that I can add a sway bar on each side if nessasary. I'm going to add the airlift system to help strengthen or support the rear leaf springs and add one sway bar. I'll see how the trailer handles with that. As for the weight in the tv will be minimal my wife and I are on the small side. I'm hoping this will get me by for this summer and then upgrade the tv next spring.

Just a follow up, I decided the tow weight was just to close to the max for the Sportrac. I went ahead and replaced the Sprtrac with a 2007 Chery Silverado with the tow package.

Thanks for eveyones input!!!
