Here's a few more speed camera studies from peer reviewed journals.

Photo radar was used in BC for a few years but it wasn't very popular. As the driver cannot be identified and one didn't have to be much over the limit to be ticketed, it was looked at as a revenue generator. The speed cameras are gone but there has been a big increase in the number of red light cameras. Because most crashes happen at intersections, I think a majority of people are in favour of those.

There is also a strong case that these same cameras help cause more rear end collisions at intersections (as nervous drivers slam on their brakes in fear of getting a ticket).

Traffic cams, banning cell phones, etc... will not stop unsafe driving. You cannot fix stupid.

Including those stupid enough be tailgating so close that they rear end people stopping for a red light.

I've been lucky to NOT be in such accidents, but I've been really close. The big problem is if the car in front decides to stop while the car behind decides to accelerate to beat the light. Lots of screeching of tires and (so far) no accidents.

They took all the red light cameras out here. Caused more problems than it solved. The only one making any money on the deal was the company that install them. It cost the PD's more than they got. It took a full time person to review the tickets to see if it was valid or not
I see they have taken all the speed cameras out in the Phoenix area, anyone know why?

Anyone who would accelerate expecting the car in front of them to try and beat a light is a menace and an accident waiting to happen. The cameras here can't be triggered until the light has turned red, meaning the car has to enter the intersection after the light has turned red. They are also only installed at intersections with a history of frequent collisions. One positive aspect is the camera could be used to determine guilt in a collision involving someone running a light. Most fatalities at intersections are not caused by idiots rear ending each other unless the fool in the back pushes someone into oncoming traffic.

On a car forum I was once on a man got a ticket in the mail from a red light camera. Not because he ran the red light but, rather because he moved off the line too soon before it turned green. I don't remember how many fractions of a second he said it was but, when he figured it out he said that if he had left down the quarter mile with that good of a start off the starting light tree he would have had a super excellent reaction time at the track.

If he left early in a drag race he would have red lighted and lost. If he had pulled out in front of someone trying to beat the light the other way, he could have got creamed.

Obey the laws and you'll have NO problems with tickets! Now, see how simple that is? Speed limits really do mean the max speed you can drive your vehicle at and stop signs mean you must come to a complete stop etc. Written laws/ driving laws are not options for your happiness or can be fudged to your liking, they are in black and white and mean what they say!

Bring on the cameras everywhere in public! Law abiding and honest people have nothing to worry about...
