I have a Barker VIP 3000. While raising the jack I accidently reversed the motor before allowing the jack to stop it's travel. The jack immediately stopped working. I checked the fuse but it was good. After about 3 or 4 minutes the jack started working again as normal. Anybody know if there is some sort of overload switch interanally that resets itself after a short wait when you do something dumb like this. I would hate to think I ruined the jack and it is still working

Verify the connections... both positive & ground. The number one problem with electric jacks seems to be the ground connection.

Ours started performing erratically this spring. I removed the screws, cleaned up the small amount of rust, made sure there was a good ground connection, bolted it back up, I covered the bolts with a coat of paint. It's working much better now.

Happy Camping!
John.

Unless you find a loose wire or something like that my guess is it was coincidental to reversing the motor. Could be a bad switch (or going bad) or even corrosion in the fuse holder causing intermittent loss of contact.

When I tried to reverse mine before stopping it blew the fuse, instantly. Only had to do that once. Try looking at the paperwork that comes with the jack to see if it has some sort of self-resetting overload breaker. Mine doesn't.

BTW, Barker warns about letting the motor stop before reversing.

One of the cautions that Barker notes in their manuals is that the motor be completely stopped before reversing direction. Not sure what could or did happen, but they do warn against it.

Kind of off topic, but I thought this was about a different kind of barker.

I had images of black water all over the place in the middle of the campground.

I agree with Skip above. The weakest link is the switch contacts in these things. They handle some pretty heavy amps, while starting under load, and don't use a HD relay for the main current. A sudden reversal flashes like an arc welder across the contacts, severely shortening their life even further.

I once had an 1988 Ford van with a HD heater motor. It ate OEM fan control switches alive, and that even includes aftermarket 12v automotive HD toggle switches that I finally installed in desperation. The final fix was permanently blocking hi-speed by forcing the fan to run through the medium high resistor or any of the lower speeds. The resistors serve as ballast to reduce current. I see my Barker 3000 has such a HD toggle switch as I first tried for just a heater blower motor. A spare switch may be gotten from Barker or most automotive stores may have suitable generic replacement when the time comes. And it will.

I was discussing w/ Barker tech support about a high-pitched squeal my VIP 3500 has developed recently. They sent me a nylon gear to replace the metal one with, and they also threw in a switch for whenever I may need it they said. Good folks.

I can't say for Barker, but our jack has both an internal overload breaker that will reset itself after 5 or 10 minutes, and an inline fuse as well.

Experience is that which you gain immediately after you actually needed it.

Thanks for the replys so far. I even appreciate the recommendations that I follow the manufacture's advice not to do what I mistakenly did. I have emailed Barker and will post their response when I receive it.

In the mean time I'll be trying to loose weight (Dr. advice), remember to take out the trash (wife's advice) and eat all my vegetables (dear old mom's advice).
