After cleaning out pilot tube, thermocoupler I can't get pilot light to stay lit after unit reaches set temp....I'm going to replace thermocoupler and pilot assembly....
I also have quarter turn shut-off valves at the hot and cold ports of the heater with a line in between them....is this a by-pass??? I only get about 20 seconds of hot water then its ice cold....should one valve be closed???

The valves on the lines should be on and the one between them off. This is the water heater bypass for use when winterizing to avoid filling the tank with antifreeze after you drain water heater. When you winterize the lines in and out should be off and the one between them on. Hope the new thermocouple solves your problem. Does the flame from the pilot hit directly on the thermocouple tube? Won't work if it doesn't.
