I'm having a weird hot water problem. I drained the hotwater heater before winter and just filled it up and turned it on for the first time this season. I left it on electric heat for about an hour. When I turn on the tap I get hot water but only for a couple seconds, then the water that flows out is cold. I have not tried using it with propane yet this season. I have the Atwood 6 gallon model. Any ideas?
Thanks

You probably forgot to switch your bypass valve which is causing cold water to mix with hot.

Or one of your showers (inside or outside) has both taps turned on and the shower handle shut off pressed on.
I believe it can only be one of the two.

If it changes very quickly then it's most likely the bypass line left open. Unless the dog shower is right outside next to the water heater it usually takes longer for the switch from hot to warm to occur.

Thanks for the replies. Which one is the bypass valve, the one on the red pipe or the white pipe?

Take a photo and pet it for a quick answer...
The bypass valve will be the one one the pipe that connects the out on the tank with the in, there will be 2 or 3 valves, normally we close the water inlet and water outet valves and open the bypass valve to winterize and we close the bypass and open the other 2 for regular flow once we sanitize after winter.
In your case the inlet and outlet valves are already open there will be one more valve that joins those 2 pipes, currently on your setup it is open, so close it.
The handles on the valves indicate open or closed, if the handle is parallel to the pipe it is open, if it is perpendicular, or makes a + sign with the pipe and gave handle it is closed, you may have only 2 valves, in a 2 vave setup, the handle points in the direction the water flows...
