holidays are major travel times for so many people. I stay away. At home, on the lake, boating, swimming, BBQing and having a blast. Then when all the crazy holiday action is over, I take my trips.

I have been camping for many more years than DW. Face it, what we do now really isn't camping but that is for a different post. I haven't been camping during a holiday for many years, explaining the crowd to her. She wanted to go last July 4th to be among the people. The first night she looked at me and said 'now I understand'! We'll stay home from now on.

YES I did the same as your DW. I had to see the holiday chaos. ONE time.
4th at the beach. Holy cow it was packed. Couldn't even use the amenities because too many clogged up the works.
TRAFFIC, can we say nightmare!

Even though we are full timers we stay in one place over the holiday. We don't move during the influx of fools and continue to watch those same idots over the holiday and then when they leave. It's interesting to just wat h what goes on.
Tis another fine day to serve in and for the glory of the Corps. Every day is a holiday and every meal a feast.

We began avoiding the holiday weekends a few years ago.
Too many drunks at the campground and our cats might like us being around while our neighborhood is being assaulted with illegal fireworks around Independence Day.

Someday that might change, for now I know it's a trade off that to enjoy the liveliness I will sometimes encounter jerks. Most people, however, have proven to not be in that category at least.
I'm glad you said this. I enjoy camping when campgrounds are full. I love walking around, talking with people, looking at different rigs. I love watching the kids play, as long as they're well mannered and not screaming day and night or running through my campsite.
We camp during holidays from time to time. I especially like to camp at Labor Day, the summer wrap up. And we love to go camping on Halloween at our nearby COE. A lot of the families set up carved pumpkins and the kids go trick-or-treating in the campground. So much fun! We have also camped a few times with extended family at Thanksgiving. We all bring our rigs and have a big meal together at someone's site. One of us cooks the turkey the day before we leave, then reheats it at the site. Only once did we have a bad campout--July 4th week at a state park. I think every college student and day tripper in a 4 county area spent their holiday whooping it up, drinking, smoking weed and causing disruptions late into the night. Our kids couldn't even play at the playground due to drug deals! We saw the police at least 4 times escorting yet another offender to the pokey. Needless to say, that was our last trip to *that* park!

Totally agree and Halloween is also one of my fave times to camp as well. Some of the campers really go out, and the CG becomes this little self contained community complete with halloween parties, costumes, little ones going from camper to camper trick or treating...very fun.

I've always considered New Year's Eve amateur night. Same deal for the 4th. Too many inexperienced drunks on the road.

DW & I fulltime and typically stay at least 1 month at a time, often 2 or 3 months so we don't stay in a lot of State / Federal Parks due to limits on length of stay but when we do....
1. We expect a LOT of in/out traffic, especially weekends / long holiday weekends.
2. We expect and are particularly careful in and about the CG because we know that many of these folks are coming from hectic lives and just don't have the time to "SLOW DOWN".
3. We try to be as helpful and as accommodating to the weekenders as possible - a smile goes a long, LONG way
4. We love watching kids at play and as DW is an excellent baker - we favor neighbors (especially those with kids) with baked confections. Those goodies go even further than #3 above.
5. We HAVE stayed at Valley of the Rouge SP and it, along with many other OREGON SP's is a wonderful place.
6. As fulltimers you should EXPECT the weekend bedlam - especially in state parks so just sit back, enjoy the frenzies, pop the top of your favorite, and be thankful that YOU don't have to HURRY to get back to work on Monday!
