I am brand new here, and renting an RV this August to drive my mother and two children (10 and 2) from Sacramento, CA to Milwaukee, WI.
We do an annual road trip in our minivan, but decided to change things up this year and try the RV. However, I have never driven one, and we inevitably hit a couple mountain ranges right off the bat.
I am looking for suggestions on routes that would not be *too* stressful for a newbie to handle, and am not opposed to going (too far!) out of my way to follow them. We love road trips, side trips, beautiful scenery. I am not opposed to doing I-80 the whole way if need be, but we've done it before in the minivan, and it is not my favorite.
I have been looking at the maps, and am considering 50 through Nevada, then picking up 70 through Colorado, and then up to 80 in Nebraska? Any advice? Thank you!!!

your 50-70-80 idea is a pretty good route. 70 through UT and CO is very scenic.
you could do a loop in UT, taking 24 down from Sigurd to Torrey and stopping there to see Capitol Reef National Park, then back up to 70. Torrey has a very nice RV park on the west side of town called 1000 Lakes. Shady with a pool and great cinnamon rolls in the a.m.

Get Mountain Directory West to help plan your trip. Have you figured out how much it will cost for fuel for the trip since you will probably average around 5 mpg.

My wife is from Milwaukee and we try to get to Milwaukee every year to visit her daughter and grandkids. One year we first traveled to Sacramento to attend her sister's wedding before heading the Milwaukee. We took I-80 out of Sacramento and stayed on it until Davenport Iowa where you would take I-88 to I-39 (Illinois) Take I-39 north to I-43 and follow I-43 into Milwaukee. The climb over Donner Pass is not bad and the other major grade you'll have is out of Salt Lake. If you take I-70 through Colorado you'll be going over a much greater mountain out of Vail. Good luck.

50/70/80 is a beautiful drive. I just came from MO. on the 70/50. 70 over the rockies does have some steep grades and the road goes above 10,000 feet. The scenery is awesome though. 50 will be all two lane highway exept from lake Tahoe to just east of Dayton NV. 80 is a much easier drive. As was said there is a grade out of salt lake. I was over 80 in June. There is construction between Sacramento and Truckee so delays are possible. 80 could be a better choice for a first RV trip. Which everway you choose have a wonderful and safe trip.
