I had someone stow mine when a sudden windstorm came up while I was gone. I very much appreciated it, and would hope I could return the favor for someone else. I do, however, understand the reluctance of people to "get involved" for fear of a lawsuit if there is even the appearance of damage. I guess we can thank the lawyers for that, as well as for printing "HOT" all over McDonald's coffee cups, and three pages of "warnings", "cautions", and "danger" notifications on the instruction booklet that comes with an electric toothbrush.

JayWalker2009 - I guess if I went over and attempted to figure something out, and looked sort of clueless for awhile, some good person might come over and help me. What I felt kind of guilty about was that I did not knock on a few doors of people with awnings and ask them if they might be willing to do something.
I guess it is never too late to ask the question. On a mechanical awning, do you not just pull them down, but crank them up?

We've put up someone's awning at Bryce Canyon. They were quite appreciative.

I have and will again BUT with that being said, not all awnings are alike so I can understand the hesitation in dealing with something unfamiliar. I know my ZipDee awning mechanism is certainly alot different than most Carefree/A&E awnings. Its not much fun to deal with an awning thats laying on the roof of your neighnors RV so doing something is supported by me!

yes we have saved a few awnings over our many years of camping.
and yes we would do it again.
we owned manual awnings so we know how to handle them and put them up for someone and would easily do it fast if needed.

We put up or at least let down dozens every summer. had one guy upset last year, he wanted insurance to buy him a new one. That would be fraud, would'nt it?
Everyone else has been appreciative.

WI Bowhunter wrote: I see no problem with it. If it as a power awning, check to see if they locked the door. We keep ours unlocked most of the time. I would be pleasantly surprised if someone saved my awning from a storm.
I would probably put up a manual awning if the rod were handy, but I don't believe I would go into someone's camper looking for the awning power button. They might appreciate it, but I would feel very funny about stepping into someone's home uninvited.
I would be uncomfortable having someone looking around my 5er for the awning switch. JMO of course.

At one campground a storm came through and destroyed several awnings before the owners had time to put them away. The scary part was an awning leg came loose and flew up in the air and stabbed through the roof of the RV in the next campsite. Luckily no one was hurt.
I would definitely try to put away an awning for a fellow camper. Or find someone that knows how to retract it.

I would put it up the first time. Here's the rest of the story. Years ago in a campground some folks with a motorhome left on a day trip and left their awning out. Storm came up and a couple other campers went over and put the awning up. Hours later the couple came back and see it was up. They made it well known for others to keep their hands off there stuff. Next day the same folks left on a day trip and the awning out. Another wind came up and when they returned the awning was on the roof. We all watched as they struggled to get it off the roof and put away good enough to leave that night.

They must have felt like real geniuses after that. Sounds like they got their just reward!
