I was prescribed ambien a few weeks ago for serious sleep issues. In a nutshell, I stay up very late as I can't sleep. This has caused many isses as I need to be up early for work refreshed. I was afraid to take them for awhile with all the precautions.
Well, I did finally take one last night and again tonight (already feeling the affects). i think it might work for me, but it states it is for short term. So that leaves me wondering, what about after that? I will go right back to old ways.
Have any of you had good longer term use of this sleep aid? I feel like I am drunk when on it. For example when watching the gymanast earlier, I saw clearly two of her. O.O Thats a sign its time to go to bed.
Would like to hear anyone's experiences - good or bad - with this medication. Im at my wits end with not being able to sleep and had to try something a bit stronger.
I would love to hear from anyone who takes it, how long they have been on, the mgs they take, and how they like it for chronic sleep disorders.
Thanks in advance.

Jay I can't help you because I have never taken it. I do know a lot of people that swear by it. I suggest you take this question and post in rving with disabilities forum. Lots of medical topics including medications are discussed. Good luck to you. If all else fails, Google reviews of Ambien.

I know a guy that takes them almost all the time. However, he only takes a half dose daily. He's a little wierd though..just kidding. His doc told him to take a break over the weekend and when ever he could.
I take one now and then (usually a half) and wish I had taken one last night so that I would be sleeping right now instead of writing this.

I take Ambien to sleep because of health issues.
However over the counter Melatonin will put you to sleep easily.
Ambien seems to linger. This is one reason we sleep in til 10:00.
I've been taking it since roughly 2001. Ambien CR will keep you sleeping longer but really holds on into the day.
Sometimes I take melatonin too. After a day or two of both it is all I can do to stay awake.
Try the Melatonin. A lot less issues.

BTDT with the lousy sleep. Check any & all meds you're taking for side effects & correct dosage. I was once given blood pressure meds that said on the bottle to take it three times a day. I actually almost killed myself after not sleeping for several weeks. Finally got a WebTV unit (long ago), got online, and found that the pill was a 24-hour time-release to be taken _once_ per day. The pharmacy went out of business before I was recovered enough to raise heII with them.
Be sure you stay away from caffeine after lunch to give your body a chance to get to sleep.
Finally, look at Zzzquil. It's new, from Nyquil. Supposed non-habit-forming. I've taken it in about 1/2 the recommended dose a few times now, and it does put me to sleep, and allow me to drop off if I wake up in the first few hours. It may help you break the cycle of not sleeping.
Good luck!

My wife takes a prescribed sleep aid as well, she use to take Ambien but did not like the drunk feeling, not remembering events after taking the Ambien and prior to going to bed. She switched to Lunesta which has been much easier on her but it is not quite as effective at helping her sleep...there's always a trade off I guess.

My problem isn't falling asleep as much as getting past 3:30am. I'm getting about 4 1/2 hours a night which isn't enough.
I've tried Ambien with poor results (I still come awake about 3:30) and don't like the drugged effect that hangs on 'til noon.
I've thought about Melatonin and need to be sure it doesn't react with some of the other scripts I take.

I have taken Ambien now as needed for a few years now. Going to sleep is not my problem, the problem is when I get up at 2AM I sometimes can't go back to sleep. I try for about 1/2 hour, if still awake I take 5mg that gives me 3-4 hours of good sleep with no after effects. I have taken it a few times when going to bed, good results then also, but I would not take it until actually going to bed, it works fast for me. The cr version lasts longer but the normal version works for me.

You can ask your doc about taking both Valerian root and Melatonin at night as an alternative to ambien. The two together work fairly well for many, just make sure it doesn't react with your current meds. They are fairly well tolerated.
I took ambien last night and had a really good night's sleep. Felt okay this morning with only sight groggy. Sunday night I slept so bad (no ambien or any sleep med that time) that last night's sleep was so so so needed.
