RE: What height garage door??

Working in overhead doors... Go with either 12 or 14 - don't go in between... Then you end up with a mismatch of 24 & 21" sections and it just gets into a gong show if you ever need work done...
And get yourself quoted 3" commercial track systems - don't go with the 2", the stuff they're using these days just isn't strong enough...

BC Salmon Runs (summer)

Ok, after an hour cruising the websites, an hour on the phone with DFO and BC parks - and I'm no more unconfused than when I started...
We're talking about a longer trip out to BC this summer, in june/july to do some exploring out in the nelson/nakusp areas (eyeballing properties out there).
Decided - might be worthwhile to see about some of those salmon runs; I see a few mentioned on the backroads map in those areas though july...
Question is - what's required, fishing license obviously, what's the salmon endorsement they mention? Is there a test or anything required to get this endorsement? Or is it just pay another fee?
Any recommendations on gear / locations / times? (been at least 20 years since I picked up a fishing rod... Figure things likely aren't as simple as they were back then...)
Thanks in advance,
Andy

RE: sedation dentistry question

So, did the lawyers get your tooth fixed??
Nope but at least they were open, dental surgeons aren't open on saturdays...

RE: sedation dentistry question

No, they can't legally put you completely under; They'd need an anesthetist to handle that. Trying to find out the details to these extents doesn't seem to exist. Phone and in office lawyer consults today - makes it seem the medical malpractice lawyers are a little iffy on this issue too (yes surprisingly there's a couple open on saturday - gotta love lawyers)
Not sure how i'm going to persue all this - i'm more pissed off about the crummy customer service from this provider than anything... Really tempted to have a chat with the local news station...

RE: sedation dentistry question

But if one is sedated... One's wishes aren't exactly clear are they? Here's where this bugs me - pay a small fortune for sedation dentistry - largely marketed at people who have fear/anxiety issues; then get told gotta pay again / pay more - because under sedation you told them to stop...
Meanwhile under sedation you're not of your right mind anyway... Can't sign contracts/drive/etc - so how does a "stop" carry the same weight - when he's got legal signed paperwork saying this is to be done?
This was closer to general anesthetic - why i went this route (Hydroxozine + triazolam + NOx).

RE: sedation dentistry question

Glad you had a good time with it - my mouth doesn't freeze; the whole side of my face, down into my neck, over into my ear freeze pretty good when they try... But my gums/mouth will still be totally unaffected.

sedation dentistry question

Trying to get some understanding here...
Went for sedation dentistry this morning (take this pill; put these two under your tongue type); didn't have a good go... Woke up to finding out the dentist only did some of the work - unfortunately not including the abscess tooth that had to be removed (whole reason for going - other stuff was just bonus)
I do have a very bad history with dentists - did finally take the abscess to get me to go get a bunch of work done... Spent all last night bordering on panic attacks about this (have a VERY bad history with dentists)
So basics are - apparently during 'sedation' I became difficult - flailing arms; then finally I apparently outright told him to stop we were done. At that point the procedure ended.
Now am I missing something here - this is sounding to me more like I wasn't sedated enough? Why would a dentist stop a major procedure with the needed work not being done - because the 'sedated' patient told him to?!?!?
Can someone clairify what's going on for me - obviously I'm not understanding something... My understanding was the level of sedation wouldn't allow that kind of consciousness? And I mean I woke up and though 'woohoo over with' then the pain started - then I realized the bad teeth were still there; and the borderline teeth were pulled and... Wow - the headache really started...
Thanks in advance
Andy

RE: "smart" hdd failure notification... What now?

Well, not looking good; even setup as a usb drive, can't seem recover much data from the drive...
Anyone know of a reasonably priced option to have a professional try to recover the data from the drive (mostly just want that 10gb of pictures that we haven't printed/posted/saved elsewhere)
Yup, I should know better... Router's setup with a tb of storage for backups - you'd think at some point I would have been smart enough to sit down and figure out how to have the vista laptop automagically backup every night...

"smart" hdd failure notification... What now?

Well laptop got abused a little this past weekend... It had a little bounce lets just say...
Of course, it blue screened... Reboot - "BIOS reports a hard disk has indicated a failure is imminent" :E Won't boot into vista normally (starts coming up with memory exceptions and bluescreens to a reboot) but will boot in safe mode w/ networking.
Microsoft backup only works outside safe mode; and I stupidly uninstalled nero 8 a few weeks ago as it was being a memory pig...
I'm half thinking since I have a spare 40gig laptop drive here, I should just get one of those 2.5" USB external drives, and diskdupe to that somehow (Does diskdupe still exist?)
Thanks in advance,

RE: RIV - Importing a 'un-listed' Class C into canada

Ok... So just got off the phone with a wonderful Customs officer down at Coutts. It's apparently much simpler than RIV/CBSA and transport canada claim...
72 hours ahead of crossing, you fax some paperwork including title, bill of sale, your d/l to the US border crossing. They run some checks...
At the time of crossing you stop at the US side, hand them the paperwork, they stamp it cleared for export, then you carry on to the canadian side, where you go in - get two stamps (gotta have the one in the square that says RIV Exempt), pay the gouge & screw tax, fee (100$)for air conditioning if it has it. They'll verify vin, and send you on your way...
Afterwords it's just a matter of an out of province inspection.
Wow TC and RIV like to make this way more difficult than it needs to be...

Yep, well aware of those two, but I wont buy a vehicle from eastern canada. Also compare those prices to what you see on the US craigslist prices... The drive down the oregon coast to the SFB area beats the heck outta northern ontario and through manitoba/saskabush :D

RE: RIV - Importing a 'un-listed' Class C into canada

There are lots of toyota motorhomes in canada... The sunraders however (fiberglass clamshell construction) - not very many - and the price they command is about 3x what they cost in the US. For what we do - yes definitely worth the effort, even if it came down to swapping out the cab/chassis of the MH.

RE: RIV - Importing a 'un-listed' Class C into canada

Year wise - looking at a bunch of options - late 70's or early 80's; theoretically RIV exempt (>15yrs exemption)... But - nothing ever seems clear when you deal with these agencies :)

RIV - Importing a 'un-listed' Class C into canada

Anyone dealt with importing a US RV into Canada?
Looking to bring a Toyota Sunrader up to the great white north... And of course RIV/TC/CRA/CBSA are being red-tape junkies about it... Sunraders aren't on the list (Doesn't seem to matter that they were sold new in canada, or that there are thousands of them registered in canada).
Not so much stuck by that - The question really is - I'm getting the impression, that I could have the clear title replaced at the border with "To be dismantled for parts". Is that really all it takes?
But the question is - does TC/RIV actually follow up - or is it simply that vin # is forever tagged as salvage? So if I were to install a cab/chassis toyota of canadian origin under that Motorhome... All would be wonderful right? :)
Anyone have some input on the matter or suggestions on how to deal with these ... Fantastic hardworking folks of CRA/RIV/TC/CBSA who are of course less than helpful...

RE: New phrases that you just hate!!

While I agree that these are over- or improperly used, "critical path" and "benchmarking" are terms of art that (assuming basic proper usage) have a known meaning. In construction (or any number of activities that are "projects") the critical path is the sequence that: a) includes required activities (including predecessors and successors) and b) takes the longest to complete.
"Benchmarking" is similar: a term of art meaning to compare to other activities of the same type.
In the construction contracting bidness, CPM (Critical Path Method) scheduling is almost universally used, while many times construction project progress is "benchmarked" by comparing to similar projects.
You don't actually talk like this do you? :W
Talk like I post...not at all
Use "Critical Path" "Benchmarking" ...all the time. When I go to the finance committee to get approval on a USD $1bn project that doesn't generate revenue for 18-30 months, they want to know the critical path, how the project schedule, cost, and risk stack up against benchmarks and they even often ask if we're following "best practice". Depending on my mood, I may tell them that there is no such thing as "best practice", but the presentations always have to identify critical path as well as show a comparison to benchmarks.
You left out BIM :B If I get one more invite to some damn conference/lecture/sales thing on BIM systems; I'm going to throw the fax machine out the damn window.
4D cad... Don't get me started, just because it doesn't conflict this week, doesn't help us out next week...

RE: Picture posting thread...anyone into it?

The old highway between Banff and Jasper:I don't think that I would want to drive over that bridge. :E It looks like grass growing on the roadway and defiantly a tree growing on the bridge!
That stretch of the road was abandoned years ago, it was quite the road with some real wicked switchbacks, I dare say I would not have wanted to take our 31 ft fifth wheel through there.....
The old road was frickin AWESOME! At least on a motorbike :)
Geeze years ago might be the understatement of the year, got to be close to 2-3 decades now...
Kinda like the new kickinghorse canyon - old road was fun, new road is navigable while keeping the breathtaking views.
