RE: 2000 Allegro Bay, 35 foot, 260 Cummins, Comments!

Good engine and tranny. The tanny is what make the comb work.
Here are some issues with the engine-
1 KDP, that may or may not be an engine with this issue. Google KDP for more info.
2. Exhaust manifold tend to shrink on Cummins B & C engines. Make sure a knowledgeable person looks at it.
3. At the age of the unit a radiator externally clogged with oil/dirt etc is not unusual. I have seen quit a few that the only way to clean properly is to remove form coach. This is an issue with any rear radiator unit.
That said the engine/tranny would be low on my concerns when buying a unit of age.

RE: Generator ?

Look at it like this
When you are driving at a constant speed on the flat it takes X BTUs to maintain that speed. Now you start up a hill, to maintain that same constant speed you need to increase the BTUs (more throttle thus more fuel). Well it is the same with the generator. The more load (like going up the hill) the more the governor opens the throttle , thus more fuel. In case 1 the load is gravity in case 2 the load is electrical.
There is no down hill with this type of generator except to turn it off.

RE: SAFARI SAHARA (1995) BATTERY HOOK-UP

Here's the link to the Yahoo group Safarifriends, lots of good data there. On my unit there are no additional wires at the coach batteries. My guess is that the wires you have in question are to some additional stuff added by a previous owner. The only way to figure out what they go to is traces them out. If your lucky there might be some info in the support data you got with the coach.
good luck. Bill

RE: Glacier National Park

Ok, From a Red Bus Driver. The best CG to stay at for a red bus tour is Glacier Meadows on HWY 2 on the south side of the Park. There are no Red Bus tours form camp grounds on the west side unless you are at Apgar CG in the park and you go to Village Inn in Apgar. See Red Bus. If you are east bound go to Great Fall after GNP to the CW Russell art museum and the Louis and Clark Great Falls interpretive center. Then wonder southeast to I-90.

RE: Replacing exaust Manf. Cummins 5.9

I replaced mine last year. my turbo is straight up. I could not find a 2 or 3 piece after market that would work. Replaced with a new Cummins unit. Be sure to replace all bolts and studs with Cummins parts. I had to install double gasket #5 port because of erosion on head side gasket face. I have been told since that using red rtv well work to stop the leak but you must let it set up a day or 2. Be sure use anti seize on the threads, torque is correct and done in proper order.

Fleetwood Discovery entry door hinge where to get?

A friend I am working with this summer has a 98 Discovery with front entry. The door has 3 combination screen and door hinges. The top 1 is cracked on the door frame side and all 3 are worn. Typical wear causing door to drop about a 1/16 inch or so. Doesn't look like a hard job to change if I can get the parts and a little in site into the replacement. I have VIN and Coach numbers plus a number stamped on the lower hinge. Any ideas where to start finding hinges and the little seals that go over them. Plus any advice on the replacement.
Thanks Bill

RE: Routing advice to Glacier

464 is know as Duck Lake road. If you can drive it as early after daylite as possible on a clear day. Look for the Osprey nest on a pole on the west side just north of Browning. Be sure to fuel up before getting to St Mary. The Steak House in Babb is good and has some net stuff to look at but service is slow. If you are going to Waterton Lakes NP the Chief Mountain RD (Hwy 17) is good with only a few rough spots, a much better view on the Canada side. There are several must see spot just over the border. Don't forget your passports as I think Canada is requiring them know.

RE: Cummings 300 diesel pusher

Which engine? Is it a C or ISB or ISC?
If it is a C the problem is likely the fuel Selenoid on the fuel pump. Known problem Cummins has a Kit for a better one.

RE: 2010 census work

I to have been accepted. Pay will be $11.25 hr. mileage $.55 per mile. Training starts Mar 30 for 5 days. Its about 20 miles to training site and they will pay mileage. They say it will be a minimum of 20 but not over 40 hours a week. I think they are still looking for people in my area. I have a summer commitment. They said go ahead and train then work till I have to leave, there will be more to do when I get back in late Oct. Hours will be very flexible. Some weekend and evening will be required.

RE: Any experience with this generator?

Here's the one I just bought of E-bay for about the same price XG SF3600 Looks like the same manufacturer. I only have an hour run time on it. The DC is unregulated (about 27 VDC no load). The VAC is clean and seems to work well Econ on or off. It is as quiet as my neighbors Yamaha 3000.

RE: 1st class A diesel - need help please!

My 2 cents worth.
If it is a 190hp it likely is hooked to the 4 speed Allison. That tranny does not have the lock up torque converter. I personally don't like that set up.
If it is the 230hp it likely has the 3060 6 speed tranny. This is the setup I have. Not a race machine but gets you there every time.
There are issues with this engine. I know for experience. PM me if you want details.
There's more things to consider than the power train. Air brakes or hydraulic, air suspension or spring, does it have an exhaust brake, etc. etc.
If there are no service records or you can't trust them plan on spending up to $10k. (tires, fluid changes, fixing stuff, etc.)
It likely has a 5k tow capacity, that kind of rules out a car trailer setup, plus dealing with the trailer at campsites is an issue a lot of the time. The Jeep (if it has the right transfer box) will work just fine if you install a braking set up of some kind.
It could be a good unit with some sweet equity.
Good luck and don't jump to quick, there are a lot of good deals out there right know if you look for them.

RE: TranSynd Transmission Fluid

The info on TF that have been tested and approved by Allison are listed in TES295 approved Fluids
Check with a local truck shop for the brands they carry. My supplier happens to carry the BP stuff.

RE: Cummins ISB Exhaust Leak

Exhaust leaks as you describe will only get worse. Do not retorque the bolts. You can try to replace the gaskets and bolts but IMHO your just treading water.
I would do one of 2 things.
1. replace the exhaust manifold and all hardware. or
2. remove manifold and have it milled and replace all hardware.
For #2 - you need to see if the manifold has sunk if it has do #1.
If you can find a mult-piece after market manifold that fits you application I would recommend it, cost more but eliminates the problems with a cast one.
I replaced mine last year with 150k on it and should have done it much earlier as I had erosion of the head flanges and had to double gasket a couple of ports to get them to stop leaking.
As to driving it for another few thousand miles, its up to you but IMHO not much more harm will be done.

RE: Boondocking - Glacier - Best Weather?

We spend our summers at East Glacier Park. The park starts reducing services about the middle of Sept. The crowds very. The berrys are ripping and animals are more active getting ready for winter. I don't know what the schedule for Going to the Sun Road is for this year. But last year there were major closing in Sept. for surfacing work. The road is in the middle of a 6 year reconstruction program. Bring hiking stuff and you should be OK.
