RE: 2010 Wisconsin RV.Net Rally May 7th - 9th, 2010

Had no plans to go anywhere this weekend but it's so nice out I'm camping in camp driveway. Anyone else out in a real campground?

RE: Prodigy showing overload, brakes intermitently failing

Remember to disconnect both wires to the axle when trying to isolate it. If you just disconnect one it may be the hot wire and you could miss isolating a magnet shorted to ground. I will, thanks :S

RE: Prodigy showing overload, brakes intermitently failing

Thanks all, I can't get it to fail when parked but I think my next step is on the next pull to see if the problem is still there since I've wiggles and jiggled everything. If it is I'll try isolatinig the axle by disconnecting one at a time and test driving it as formentioned. I think I also may be able to borrow another prodigy controller from a friend, if so I can try that also. "Frustrating" definitely, 'impossible' I don't think so. I'll find this bugger sooner or later.

RE: Prodigy showing overload, brakes intermitently failing

I've found nothing :? pulled it all apart and cut the magnet wires to do the coil to housing short circuit test. Couldnt find anything indicating a short or anything that even looked questionable. On the bright side since I had it all apart I did my wheel bearing service. What are the chances that the Prodigy brake controler itself may be faulty?

RE: Prodigy showing overload, brakes intermitently failing

Well so far I've inspected all of the visible wires for signs of wear or shorts and found nothing. Now on to pulling the drums off and inspecting the magnets and other internal guts :h This is going to be a long day :(

RE: Prodigy showing overload, brakes intermitently failing

Is there a way to actually test the magnets with a multimeter to see if one is going bad? If so does anyone know the values I should see on the meter?

RE: Prodigy showing overload, brakes intermitently failing

Looks like I'm getting the impact out soon and doing some tear down. Hope it's easliy found. :? Thanks all for your responses. If anyone else has some ideas please post them. I'll post what I find once I get a few hours to tear into this. Thanks.

Prodigy showing overload, brakes intermitently failing

Hi all, please give me some feedback on what the overload code (oL) on a Prodigy brake controler is indicating that I need to adjust, replace, or fix? While towing our TT the brake control is fine when we first start out running @ 10 volts no boost, after a while of towing the overload (oL) flickers on and off while the voltage is displayed as I apply the brakes, as this happens we get a jerking and push as the trailer brakes intermittently switch on and off. Seems to be fine when we start out (cold) but once all the workings are warmed up the problem surfaces and is evident at all speeds. This however is not happening every time we apply the brakes, only about 30% of the time. I checked the trailer cord for damage and cleaned & dialectric greased the connections but the problem persists. On the tow home I dailed down the voltage to a max of 7 volts and the problem went away? Do I have a bad magnet in the trailer brakes I can Ohm test to find it, is there a brake gap or something I can adjust? How best can I diagnose this without just blindly swapping parts. TT has about 9,000 miles on it. All constructive feedback welcome. Thanks.

RE: Tow With Expedition - How Realistic

there is no reason to believe that an independent suspension could not be built that was just as strong...take the Humvee for instance. not to get too off topic but ask any Jeep guy how a Humvee does off road and they will tell you the independent suspension is worthless except for ground clearance. The HumVee's drivetrain is so high off the ground the only way to keep the rest of the gear out of the way is independent on all four corner. Solid axle pumpkins have a tendancy to hit mines/bombs. :( And jeep guys are an authority on this for the US military :h I feel safer already :S

RE: Tow With Expedition - How Realistic

I used to tow the TT in my sig with a 2003 EB Expedition and the equalizer WD hitch. Pulled that combo for 3 years or so including out to the Smokey mountains and to the Colorado Rocky mountains. Towed straight and with confidence with the WD cranked tight but it did leave me wanting a bit more power at times when I wanted to drive more aggresively, the 2003 had the old 5.4 (newer 2004 & up 5.4 has a some more power) and mine had the tow package also. Havnt seen anyone comment on the wheel base but keep that in mind as a short wheel base can be prime for sway issues if your TT gets too long. In the end I missed having a p/u truck and want to move into a 5th wheel one of these days so now switched to the 1 ton diesel Chevy in my sig. It's fun to go to the RV shows now and ask "Can tow that?".... :W

RE: 2010 Wisconsin RV.Net Rally May 7th - 9th, 2010

Maybe not, Mike. It's after 3 and we haven't even started washing yet! Not sure if it's going to get done or not. I was going to start it myself, but I figured that I should probably take care of my cast iron, first. Anyone know how to re-season a Dutch oven? :B Please remind me not to wait from October to May to clean out whatever it was I made at the fall rally from my Dutch ovens! Had to boil two of them to get them clean and then had to bake on some new seasoning. Good thing it's nice enough to have the windows open! I figured it was better to clean the cast iron than the camper . . . that is, if anyone wants to eat anything out of my Dutch ovens this weekend! :B :B :B From your dutch oven, yes! If you bring more deviled goose eggs, yes! Everything you make is always delicious :B

I washed and waxed the TT today in preperation (also because it was WAY overdue for a little TLC). Is there going to be a prize for shineyest rig :@
