RE: Advice for things to see 'n' do around Mesa Verde etc.

While you are in the Farmington area, check out the Bolack Wildlife Museum if you want to spend a day indoors (out of the heat). We found it to be very interesting although we almost passed it up as it is by reservation only, but it is also free. We had our own personal tour guide. It is one of the largest, most impressive wildlife museum's we have ever been to and well worth the time.

RE: THE BEST LOCATIONS FOR WORKAMPING

gardencontessa6:
We often find volunteer positions on volunteer.gov/gov They usually outline the type of volunteer position needed, number of hours expected and what they provide in return. There is always a contact person if you have questions not addressed in the ad. (It is always best to get all pertinent information up front . . . less surprises when you get there) Some subscribe to Workkamper.com as well which offer paid as well as volunteer positions.
On occassion we have decided we want to go to a particular location/state and then just contacted several agencies in the area individually either by email, phone or mail and went with whichever one got back first. After all, the best volunteer position is when you are where you want to be and doing what you like to do.
We have been full-time and volunteering since 1999 and still loving this lifestyle!

RE: Inflatable Kayak

Also check out Folbot.com We have a Folbot which is easily dissasembled and fits in two bags which go right into the compartment on the motorhome. They are pricey but very well constructed. Can only order on line or else from the factory in Charleston, SC. We enjoy the fact that it is so easy to tuck out of sight for traveling and when not in use.

RE: What to do in Asheville with kids

The Discovery Center at the Cradle of Forestry on Hwy. 276 just up from Pisgah Forest (11 miles up the mountain on 276) in the Pisgah National Forest. We have volunteered there many times and it is a great place for adults and children. (Also a great place to volunteer)
They have many planned activities throughout the summer just for children. There is an activity center with "hands-on" activities for kids as well as two paved trails to hike (each about 1 mile loop). One has seven historic buildings including a one-room school house and a blacksmith's shop which are always a hit with the school groups who come through. They have crafter's dressed in period clothing on the weekends and a summer songfest every Sunday afternoon in July.
The other trail has an old steam engine, a portable sawmill, a trout pond and other forest displays.
The Cradle of Forestry is where the first school of forestry in America was established in the late 1800s and is run almost entirely by volunteers. Also can get there from the Blue Ridge Parkway going south from Asheville.

RE: Ocala National Forest Workamping

You mention Workkamping at ONF as opposed to volunteering. ONF is all volunteer now, except at the concession run campgrounds (Salt Springs Rec Area, Juniper Springs, Alexander Springs, Clearwater Lake and Silver Glen Springs day use). To work concession, you need to apply directly with the concessionaire at the appropriate campground, not the ONF volunteer coordiantor. As of May 1st of this year, ONF no longer pays a stipend to volunteers, however they will continue to reimburse mileage if you use your own vehicle for traveling to your work site, etc.
There are a number of diverse volunteer positions at ONF, from campground hosts, staffing visitor centers to Off-Highway Vehicle trail rangers/maintenance. They generally require 24 hours per site.
Fore Lake generally has two host positions and they arrange their schedule as to who works which days between the hosts. Fore Lake has full hookup sites for the volunteers, plus a landline which is shared by the two hosts. There is some cell service in this area as well. It is only about 10 miles or so to Silver Springs for shopping, etc.
Hope this helps in making your decision.
