RE: Question on Chevy HHR

Our 2009 HHR does a fine job and tows great with the automatic. I made a simple switch to bypass the fuse when we tow, so it is a simple process. Seems to be a great toad selection.

RE: Winnebago Warranty & Quality issues

Very few issues in two year of fulltiming, but in two visits to the factory, all issue were quickly and competently repaired. One thing that has really impressed me is that they caught a couple of issues I was unaware of and fixed them in warranty, including a chassis issue with the brakes. Very good folks and our future coaches will be Winnebago.

RE: 2010 HHR vs 2010 CRV for toad. Which is best?

We have towed an HHR for 15,000 miles (driven another 16,000) and it has worked flawlessly. I like all the creature comforts and the heated seats have been a real plus in Florida this winter! We did the towbar install with no problem and it is easy to connect and go.
I also noticed the Consumer Reports now rates the HHR as "Recommended", so the car must do pretty well on the reliability angle. I would drive both (we did) and make your choice.

RE: Rate these motorhomes

Our 2008 Tour has been great. We considered the same three coaches when selecting ours and got the Tour since we liked the floorplan better. All three were good choices in my opinion.

RE: Does RV dishwasher really work good?

Another ditto for the FP dishwasher. Love ours as we fulltime and we use it everyday -- even when boondocking as it uses less water and does a better job than doing dishes by hand. I also found that if you get an error indicator lit on the panel, unplugging it from 110v and then replugging it solved mine.

RE: Winnebago Tour vs Tiffen Phaeton

We looked at the Phaeton and Tour -- both coaches are great, but we went for theTour. Reasons-
--400 ISL Cummins with clutch cooling fan standard.
--2 stage engine (not exhaust) brake.
--Larger holding tanks (our TD model has 120 gallons grey, 60 black) - very handy in some situations
--Power Management system -- allows both AC units to run on 30 amps -- this has been a huge advantage on some occasions. We were with friends who have multiple roof AC units -- but on 30 amps, they could only run one. In 100+ temps they cooked (and came to our coach to get cool).
--Basement A/C -- yes we really like this! Has cooled great up to 106 degrees heat so far. Uses a "house" type 20x14 furnace filter which is much easier to change than the multiple, round ceiling filters. We find it quiet and effective. I would suggest that you go and try it yourself to see.
--Winnebago makes almost everything on the house side. Easy to get parts if needed.
-- Service is a strong point for both units. We have fulltimed in our Tour for the past 2 years, 22,000 miles and have had very few, minor problems which were quickly handled by Winnebago. I continue to be impressed with how well this coach is holding up.
I would buy another Winnie in a minute if I needed one.

Wife wanted a house -- but sales rep wanted to Fulltime!

We have been happily fulltiming for over two years, but with pressure from parents to "nest" close by, my wife wanted to look at a couple model homes in a development. Talking to the sales rep who asked where we lived now, we mentioned we were fulltimers -- he then said, "Gosh, that is what I am dreaming about!" He then asked where we had traveled and before I knew it, my wife was regaling him with our travels and the guy was asking all kinds of questions. He finally asked why we would want to buy a house! Good question -- turns out we don't!
This little experience reinforced how fortunate we are to fulltime and the fact we really DO NOT want a fixed house again for a while -- who knows how long. We will come visit the parents in a nearby RV park and enjoy the fulltime lifestyle. Sometimes a comparison is a great reminder.

RE: installing a dishwasher

We installed a Fisher-Paykel dishwasher in our 2008 Winnebago Tour and love it! I did the install myself (see Dishwasher Install for pictures) and was very pleased how it turned out.
We fulltime and for the past 14 months have used it virtually everyday -- absolutely no problems. The best part is that it really cleans the dishes and uses LESS water than doing them by hand (as little as 2.5 gallons per load). We have been at several rallies without hookups and routinely run the dishwasher to conserve water. Works great.
Feel free to PM me if you have questions.

RE: About to tow HHR for first time - How does yours tow

We have been pulling our HHR for several months and 10,000 miles with no problems. Works great, easy to tow, and actually fun to drive.

RE: What's up with Pilot?

Guess we are the minority here since we actually like most of the Pilots we have been to. Always use the truck lanes, pay cash and have never had any problems. The wife goes in with an estimate of fuel needed, arranges the cash, and we fill up. Plus, Pilot seems to have the best coffee (that is the real reason we stop there!)

RE: retirement motor home

We have fulltimed for 2 years in our 40' coach and have had very few problems with small spaces. We have used a number of state parks around the country and find that if we show up on a Monday - Wednesday, we can talk to the ranger at the gate and they can find a good site for us. We make it a point to avoid state parks on the weekend if at all possible due to crowds.

RE: auto vs manual sat dish?

We have had the manual type and now have the automatic Kingdome. I love the automatic! Just hit the switch and a couple minutes later all is done. Now my wife does it (what a tough life!) -- she would never mess with the manual one. M

RE: Are newer diesels equipped with Particulate Filters?

We have an 08 Winnie Tour on a Freightliner XC chassis with a Cummins 400 ISL engine with new EPA emissions. I have gotten over 8 mpg over the past 22,000 miles with no problems at all. The regen feature has not yet run to my knowledge. Interestingly, the 400 Cummins seems to be getting at least as good MPG as our smaller 2004 Meridian with the Cat C7 engine, so I am very well pleased thus far.

RE: hhr base plate

I installed our baseplate in an 09 HHR and had the same problem with the fished bolts. We ended up loosening everything (instructions states all should be tightened before the "fishing" takes place) and finally got them fished through by using a heavy fishing line (literally). After that, no problems and the HHR tows great. See HHR Tow bracket installation

RE: basement air conditioning

Our basement AC works great and actually seems quieter than our friend's roof air. I also much prefer having a large, residential furnace filter versus the little foam filters. Finally, we have used our basement AC in temps up to 107 and it worked well -- and I could run it wide open on 30 amps (why is it always hot when we have to hook up to 30 amps??).

RE: Brake Buddy Customer Service

We have used our Brake Buddy for 2 solid years of fulltiming. The compressor began to get loud and I called Brake Buddy who said to return it. They repaired it, quickly returned it to me and covered everything under warranty. I think this is a very classy outfit and I have enjoyed using their product which works as advertised.

RE: Tow lights - Magnetic vs wired diodes

We did not have room in the HHR tail light for an extra bulb, so I added LED lights to the bottom of the bumper (above the federal height requirement of 15" off the road). This has worked great, and there is no interaction with the factory systems. See this Click for pictures.

RE: Florida Ocean Cruise RV Parking

We took a cruise from Port Everglades in May and stayed at the Great Outdoors RV park. We signed up for a couple weeks with a private owner and explained it would be vacant for the cruise week -- we got a very reasonable rate. We kept our Golden Retriever in a kennel in Canine Villa -- they did a great job.

RE: Cat C-7 rear radiator fan hub bearing failure

For what it is worth, when my bearing failed on our 2004 Meridian with the C7, it was quite load at idle. You could clearly hear that something was wrong as soon as it was cranked up. I was also able to move the fan several inches fore and aft. If I still owned that coach, I would certainly try to detect movement by hand (engine off, please!) once a year or so. Since this incident, I have made it a point to walk around the coach while it idles before taking off in the morning.
