RE: Newfoundland/Labrador or Alaska?

I have the 2010 Newfoundland Labrador Traveller's Guide that I ordered on line and it shows the new road from the Newfoundland ferry to Goose Bay (Happy Valley. I also talked to a Newfoundland rep at a fly fishing show a few weeks ago and he said the road is definitely completed. Not sure how much is paved but we are planning visit Newfoundland and then take the short ferry to Labrador and drive across it and return thru Quebec this summer. Mapquest and the Good Sam trip guide haven't updated their sites to show it yet - wrote a note to both of them so hopefully they will update their sites. We went to Alaska, etc. last summer from the East Coast on a 3 month trip. 5 weeks would definitely not leave time for much but driving. See our blog about that trip.

RE: Trans Labrador Highway Diesel

After exploring Newfoundland this summer, we plan on taking the ferry from Newfoundland to Labrador - then taking the new road to Goose Bay, Labrador City, and coming back thru Quebec. It should be great.

RE: Removing strong taste and oils from blue fish

Sometimes people catch so many bluefish, they just leave them in the bottom of the boat or lying on the beach instead of putting them in a live well or bleeding them and putting them on ice. There is no question that bluefish are great if eaten very fresh, but if they are not treated properly and then frozen, they can get a strong taste. What I don't eat the night I catch them or the next day, I smoke. We use a smoker with water underneath the fish, and don't really dry them out too much. Then you can eat them soon or freeze them after smoking -that way they keep better. Leftover cooked fish can make great sandwiches - fix them like tuna fish sandwiches.

RE: TOW Highway-smoke!! , Chicken and Tok

Drove it this morning and didn't think it was that bad - took 5 hours from Chicken to Dawson City - including lunch and stopping for photos.

RE: Have a Blog?

We are heading north - currently in CA after coming from MA through many SW National parks. Will be on the ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert June 15th (if not sooner).

RE: Washrooms

Gary and Sue I use exactly the same thing (but red) - it is great - and still it is hard to find a place to hang it all of the time. Will put a scrunchie in the kit to expand my options, (and maybe a hammer and nails :)

Washrooms

After the last 3 weeks on the road visiting many campsites, one thing is noticable about washrooms. Some are fine and have shelves to put down a toilet bag, but many (especially in National Parks) don't. Even a simple hook (or a nail in the wall) would be a big help. Most toilet bags have loops or hooks, but if there is nothing to hook it to or hang it on, you have to try to put it in the wet sink you are using or maybe balence it on the trash can. Hanging up a towel for a minute would be a luxury in some places. A few nails and a hammer would make a lot of the washrooms much easier to use.

RE: Plum Wine

Use wine yeast - and try to let it clear up in the fermenter before you bottle it. It may take a while. We did some with green gage plums and it was over 2 years to clear up. A year after we bottled it, it was one of the best wines ever. Hope yours clears faster than that - but it is better to wait it out instead of throwing it away.

RE: Who is driving to Alaska this summer?

We are leaving MA on May 1 for the Southwest in our Sprinter. Then heading up thru CA and taking the Port Hardy to Prince Rupert ferry on June 15th. Meeting a buddy by Anchorage on June 27th. Those are our only firm dates - so will play it by ear other than that. Mt. Redoubt may alter some of our plans for the Kenai.

RE: "Who's Going to Alaska in 2009?"

Thanks Hook, That makes sense. I do want to fish for salmon and also do a halibut charter in the Kenai area. Any suggestions on the size rod and line for fishing along the streams there and on the way up? Will be up there the last week of June and spend a lot of July in Alaska, not to mention driving thru BC and the Yukon on the way up and back.

RE: "Who's Going to Alaska in 2009?"

Will be heading up - ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert on June 15th. The eruption of the volcano at Mt. Redoubt makes me hesitate to make any reservations for campsites withen several hundred miles of the mountain. It seems like it will be spitting out ash for quite a while, so the provailing wind may make the camping and fishing in some areas less than desirable - some of the time. I think it may be better to stay flexible - any thoughts on this??? Maybe it would be a good idea to carry an extra air filter (?)
