RE: Lake Lanier GA campgrounds etc.

Another vote for Old Federal. We have stayed there 5 or 6 times visiting relatives nearby.

RE: New Tires @ 6 Years?

Every one to his own thoughts, but last January, I decided to "stretch" for one more trip before springing for new tires. The old ones were 7 1/2 years old. Long story short, I blew two tires on the road. First one was on the open road at 60 mph and did $3400 damage to the underbody. We got the spare mounted (road service) and got it patched up and went on our way. 300 miles later, the second tire blew. Luckily, we were nearing our campground and at a low speed, so no damage was done. We limped the last 15 miles to the campground at 25 mph on one of the rear duals. Next day, I bought a whole new set. I know 7 1/2 years is too long, but they "looked good" and had "been taken care of". I won't go past 6 years again. It just ain't worth the hassle of waiting for road service, having to get temporary repairs on the road, and three weeks in the shop getting the permanent repairs made when we got home; not to mention the danger we put ourselves in.

RE: TX Hill Country?

I'm not usually a fan of KOA, but the one in Fredericksburg is my favorite place to stay when we go there. Just be sure to call direct for reservations, don't use the KOA site or phone. The people that own it are great and will help you get a good site. Ask for one near the back in the trees! They're large sites, and flat with all hookups.

RE: Colorado - US 285

Thanks for the info!!! Looks like a good way to go. For once, Streets and Trips didn't send me off into the boonies! Wow, I can't wait to get into the mountains! I need to see some hills around me every once in a while! I love Southeast Texas, but, boy is it FLAT!!!

RE: Texas Motorspeed Way - First Time Camping - What To Expect

I don't know about other tracks, but Texas Motor Speedway has lots of reserved sites. HERE'S a description of the sites there. Call the ticket office to reserve. They even reserve a specific site for you. I'm not sure if you have to buy tickets to camp, but can't understand why anyone would want to camp there without going to the race! I guess you could camp without tickets, but why pay $200 to camp in a 20 x 40 site in the middle of a field with no hookups and lots of traffic! Seriously, it's lots of fun to camp at the track and take in all the stuff going on on race weekend.

Colorado - US 285

We are planning a trip to Colorado this summer. Streets and Trips routes us from South Fork to Denver up US 285 thru Buena Vista and on to I-70. We usually like to take the scenic routes away from the freeways where it's practical, but don't want to get into any narrow or super curvy or extreme grades. I don't mind some curves and grades and we usually are not in a hurry-would rather enjoy the ride! Has anyone taken this route? We are driving a 37 foot Southwind gasser with a Jeep toad.

RE: Fridge wont work on AC

Take the cover off of your controller board on the back of the fridge and see if there is a small glass tube type fuse that has blown. This is what caused my fridge to stop working on AC. Access to the controller board is thru the outside compartment of the fridge. The cover on the board on mine was a bear to get off because it is behind some of the plumbing to the fridge, but I got it far enough off to find the fuse. It has blown twice in the 7 years I owned the unit. My service guy says it's usually blown when there is a power surge on AC. At least it is cheaper to replace a 75 cent fuse than an expensive board! It's just another thing to check.. Hope it helps.

RE: Need Destination Suggestion

Try Cedar Hill State Park . I checked a few days ago and they had lots of sites available. We stay there a lot, and have never seen it sold out. It's on Joe Poole lake, with some good bank fishing, and several boat ramps if you have a boat.

RE: Davis Mountains State Park, Texas

Davis Mountains State Park is one of our favorite places. We try to go in the spring, when there are lots of birds and wildlife. We have never had a problem with the Javalinas or the deer. Feeding the animals is prohibited (and it's enforced!), but you can put our bird feeders. Take a couple of seed feeders and a hummingbird feeder or two, and sit back and watch!

RE: $400. ok for professional exterior detail???

Just had my 37 foot Motor Home done in Mission, TX for $140 - Wash (including roof, slide out toppers, slide outs under toppers, clean awning (top and bottom), hand wax and buff, polish wheels, and Black Magic on tires and black trim. He comes to the campsite to do it.

RE: Chair rail Wallpaper

My Southwind had the same problem when still under warranty. The dealer reglued it and glued on small wood (or woodgrain plastic) strips along the edges. The strips are about 3/4 inch wide by 1/8 inch thick-similar to screen molding. They've been there 7 years with no problems. The service tech told me that they can't keep the edges of the wallpaper strips from curling. They came up with the procedure to cover the edges with molding. Actually it looks very nice and it works! Check Lowes or Home Depot in the moulding department to see what they have.

RE: Cedar Hill Texas

We stay at Cedar Hill State Park several times a year when visiting relatives. IMHO, it's a great park, large sites, lots of room, on Lake Joe Poole, and close to grandson! The only drawback is no sewer hookups.

RE: Speeding ticket?

I never got a speeding ticket in RV, but I got stopped by Texas DPS Trooper for expired inspection sticker! He let me off with warning since I told him we had been out of town for over a month and my registration was in Harris County, which requires emissions check. That was the truth and he bought it! But, he did a complete check of everything before he let me go-coach and toad lights, tow hookups, toad brake, safety equipment.

RE: Texas Motorspeed Way - First Time Camping - What To Expect

We were camping at TMS two years ago in the reserved spots. They do have honey wagon and water, but it's expensive, $50 for the honey wagon and $25 for water fill,if I remember correctly. We filled the fresh water, dumped the tanks before we went in and had no problems. There is a dump station there, but be prepared to wait in a long line even the day after the races. We went in on Thursday and stayed til mid day Monday to miss the traffic. We went to all three races and spent some time on the midway. That seems to be the norm, but many come earlier or later. The sites are just 20x40 spots, with a road on either side so you can pull thru. If you can arrange to park in the opposite direction from your neighbor (with your entry door and awning facing each other, you'll both have more room. Just hope for good neighbors! We didn't hear of any problems with theft. Get acquainted with your neighbors and lock your doors. There's a lot of partying going on, but no one got out of control when we were there, just a lot of good natured fun. Get a couple of chairs, a fridge full of your favorite beverage (mine just happens to be Diet Coke!), and enjoy the show around you. Then take in the midway and the races! If you haven't been to a live race before, you are in for a treat. Hints: Take sunscreen, ear plugs, and rent a scanner to listen in on your favorite driver. They also have a scanner channel for the radio broadcast and the TV broadcast to help keep up with the race. The track also had a TV broadcast of the net work feed, but that was before the all digital conversion. We used it to keep up with practice and what the tv guys were saying in the programs before and after the race. I don't know if they still have that now. P.S. They have an informal church service on Sunday morning before the race. It's a good way to start the day! They even have door prize drawings!

RE: Sun Sceen for front windshield

I've had Prompt Sunscreens on my coach for 8 years. They are great. No snaps, no ladder, 5 minutes to put on or take down. They've been on in 30 mph winds and did not come off!

RE: Washer dryer ??????

We didn't want one, but the MH we bought had a Splendide all in one in it. Now wife says that I can never buy another RV without a washer dryer in it! We travel about half the time and can keep up with most laundry. It does small loads and the dryer is not very efficient, but if we keep up (do laundry at night), we seldom go to a campground laundry.

RE: Big Bend Ranch State Park (TX) questions...

I don't think you will get high centered from what I have seen. But the width may be a problem on some of the roads. For sure, you'll get a few "Texas Pinstripes" from the thorny creosote bushes along the roads. Also, most of the roads are sharp stones. Lower air pressure will help keep them from puncturing the tires-that's the voice of experience talking here! It's a great park for those who enjoy the desert wilderness. Lots of 4WD roads to explore. Enjoy your trip!

RE: Good price for Oil and Lube?

There's a truck lube place near me-kind of like a Jiffy Lube on steroids! They charge $55 for oil, filter, and lube, and check an fill all fluids. My rig is a gasser, Ford F53 chassis. The good part is it only takes 20 minutes. Pull into their shop over a pit and the guys go to work. They do a lot of big 18 wheelers, but welcome RV's-gassers and diesels. I never have any kind of service work done at Camping World! Too many bad experiences and heard too many horror stories! And their prices are always high. The myth that they have "trained techs" is a joke. Most are newbies who go on to better jobs when they get the training and a little experience. Besides, customer service at every Camping World I have been in stinks. I'll find someone else take my business to.

RE: Route Planning

I've had my eye on the following GPS unit for some time: http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/garmin-nuvi-465t-gps-navigation-system/47589 It's kind of pricy, but the trip routing seems to factor in some of your conceerns. Don't know if anyone who already has it or not could comment? Camping world "sale" price is $499. You can get at Amazon for $347 with free shipping. I find that Camping World is always higher priced on items that you can get elsewhere. HERE'S A LINK to the Amazon item.

RE: Big Bend NP question

We've been to Big Bend several times. We had good signal on Verizon in most of the park As to liking the park, I'll add a little balance to the issue and say that I LOVE BIG BEND! It's one of my favorite places. We spent a month there last spring and could have stayed longer. But, we love the wilderness areas to explore, and find the desert intriguing. We stayed at Big Bend resorts in Study Butte/Terlingua. We find it satisfactory, with full hookups, large sites, friendly people. amd only a couple of miles from the park entrance. Just remember it's in the middle of a desert, and the facilities are not lush green lawns with pavement in between. Talk to some of the locals for interesting stories and interesting, if somewhat eccentric, people! It takes a special kind of person to live in the desert, and they all have a story to tell if you take time to listen.
