Hmm, Sandra Bullock or a walking tramp stamp, yeah real tough decision. James is a loser.

RE: NASCAR

I'm watching Danica Patrick right now, on Versus, at the IndyCar race in San Paulo Brazil. So far, it's somewhat of a fiasco. Danica had a minor screwup, and others had major screwups. We'll see what happens after the rain quits.
Was everybody ok in this wreck?

RE: Carl Edwards

I am a Dale Sr. fan. I believe he was the catalyst for what Nascar has become today. He set the standard, and brought the excitement and passion that has helped propel nascar to its unbelievable success.
Of the current drivers I like Harvick and Stewart, both successful drivers and owners yet that is not the only reason I Like them. They seem like non-PC, just get it done type guys. Both these guys seem extremely driven both on the track and in particular off the track. Guys that are not usually afraid to speak their mind in a direct fashion regardless of whether what they say will be 'popular' or not.
I grew up at the local fairground short-track where my father raced along with his partner. These local guys raced with a passion, and poured their heart, soul, and money into the racing operation all week long just to have another shot at winning the feature on Saturday night and kissing the trophy girl in front of the hometown crowd. Disagreements were settled on and off the track, usually outside of the pit gate. They were honest with their feelings and resolved differences face-to-face, only to return the next weekend to race side-by-side once again. You may not like the other guy, but you always knew where they stood on things.
I and I think a good part of our Nation is fed up with the politically correct, talk around the issue, nanny society we have become. I don't want to watch politically correct nanny drivers, I want to see real human-beings with emotion, passion, and desire for what they do.

RE: Carl Edwards

Behind closed doors Nascar has to have a grin on their face that is a mile wide. What a great storyline this has been, you could not have scripted a better story if you sat down and penciled it out beforehand. This is the kind of drama that will continue to attract fans and sponsors to the sport going forward.
We are now 5 days post incident headed towards a non-race weekend and the story still has legs. On this forum alone there are a 1000+ views of this topic and in general there are few threads in the ATC that ever attract that kind of viewing numbers. Just when you think things have settled down, Burton pops up and keeps things alive, almost like it was planned.
Whoever the people are within Nascars organization that championed the new, 'let them race, let them wreck, let them fight' policy should all be getting raises right about now.
And my absolute favorite part about this particular article...
Burton's answer goes on for three or four paragraphs using his typical politically correct speech.
And Harvicks answer?
KEVIN HARVICK
(ON THE PENALTY)
"It's a different era from when I got in trouble. I wish I would have gotten in trouble now because it would have been a lot cheaper.
"I just got in trouble in the wrong era.''
What a riot!

RE: Carl Edwards

Roush statement: "We are satisfied that NASCAR fairly considered all the circumstances in its decision to discipline Carl (Edwards). We look forward to meeting with NASCAR, Roger (Penske) and Brad (Keselowski) in Bristol next weekend and it is our hope to put this behind us at that time.
Wink Wink...
Missed in all of this was a really strong performance by Roush Fenway - and the Ford teams in general - at Atlanta last weekend and we are eager to continue to build on that moving forward."(Roush Fenway PR)(3-10-2010)
LOL, PR opportunity, nicely done.
So Carl and Brad have to cool it for awhile. Who should be the next players to have a dust up?

RE: Carl Edwards

No question that Brad needed knocked down a notch or two based on his history, but Carl is no saint. Carl has had his share of missteps and while cloud dancer is right these drivers are human and subject to the human condition, Carl seems to lose all semblance of judgment when he gets focused on payback. You can tell this has been eating at him for awhile.
Run Brad up into the fence on the cool down lap, ok. Bide his time and pick a place and time to spin Brad out while they are racing together for position in a future race, ok. Confront Brad after a race, ok.
Turn Brad at a high speed track on the front straight in cars that have a proven history for the potential to go airborne, all while he is 100+ laps down? Not ok.
I'm willing to bet that in Carl's rage he thought of none of this before extracting payback, and I'm willing to bet if he had he would have picked a different route. But that's kind of how rage works I guess. I find it disingenuous for him to say that he didn't think the car would get airborne. Carl has been around for awhile and knows full well the potential these cars have for getting airborne.
The whole facebook angle may have potential. Drivers feuding during the week on the internet and then coming face-to-face on the weekends could make for some good entertainment. Oftentimes things are said on the internet that would not be said face-to-face. A driver posts a poll for fans to vote on the method of payback would be interesting. This will be another form of media that nascar will have to monitor so that it generates just the right amount of excitement but not over the 'always moving imaginary line'.
Just like in professional wrestling, a good drama needs a heel and a good guy, and the fans get to decide who is who.
At any rate, I'm liking what nascar is selling this year. Racing was never a gentleman's sport, and efforts to wimpify the sport have resulted in a lesser quality product.

RE: Your most comfortable car

Very few of the new cars are comfortable for me on long trips.
My most comfortable vehicles have all be ones that did not have the center console and/or shift lever taking up precious leg splaying room in the cabin. My most comfortable truck was an 86 Ford automatic with bench seat. Upright normal seating position, lots of side legroom to spay my legs out and bench seat to put my arm over.

Amazing, simply amazing. I see this kind of thing on craigslist as well:

RE: My official hate GMC thread!

Checking in with my 2000 GMC sierra 2500 NBS. Owned since new, has 100K on it now. I purchased an additional warranty to take it to 70K, 7 years but I don't recall ever needing warranty beyond the factory one.
Brake booster replaced under factory warranty.
Intermediate steering shaft re-filled with grease under factory warranty.
Steering shaft started rattling again at 40K and is still rattling at 100K.
The new style steering shafts supposedly have a nylon coating on the the coupler which is supposed to tighten up the tolerance (slop) and eliminate the need to keep them packed with grease. (probably how they should have been designed in the first place). The napa replacement was $60 last time I checked and I believe there is a heavy duty one available from Borgeson?
Some pictures here:

I've done the research but have been too lazy to actually do the work so far. :)
I've owned GM and Ford pickups at various times in my life and each of them have provided very good service.

RE: Delta Wing Indycar

I hope they are not serious about implementing this car as it would surely put the final nail in the coffin for Indy car racing. Whatever new car they come up with needs to remain a true open wheel design, not some half-breed triangle shaped thing.
I am a big open wheel fan and hate to see the series struggling like this. I sincerely hope something can be done to return the series to long-term viability. I watched part of a couple of the oval races last year and seem to remember there was some good close wheel-to-wheel racing right up until the checkered flag.
Beyond the affordability, safety, and competitiveness of the car, there are so many other things that need to be improved. Things that nascar has done a great job at, such as highlighting driver personalities and creating drama on and off the track, not to mention exceptional camera work, and personable announcers.
Sports entertainment is about drama and keeping the fans engaged throughout the experience. Always remember that we live in an instant gratification, short attention span, media sound-bite society these days, and this colors what the fans are desiring. Right off the bat this is a strike against road racing as most Americans have no interest in it. Too hard to follow, too much space between the cars, can't 'see' the whole track, not enough side-by-side action etc. Nascar makes this work on two exceptional road courses with close side-by-side action, banzi moves, superb camera work, a great cast of characters, and excellent story telling. And yes I realize full fendered cars are more conducive to running side by side or up against each other than open wheel.
Drama requires a full complement of characters to be interesting. You need a villain, a hero, the sentimental favorite, the under dog, the milk toast guy, the always has an excuse guy, the short tempered guy, the whiner, the suck-up guy, the socially awkward guy, and the crying guy, and probably some I'm forgetting. Nascar has all this in spades, AND they are all approachable and Americans can pronounce and remember their names.
The only driver I can remember off the top of my head from Indy/cart cars is Paul Tracy, and I remember him because he was a good driver but also because he actually had a personality (no milk-toast there). He may not even be competing anymore for all I know, but I remember him.
Just look at the margin of victory in each of the nascar speed weeks races. All of them save for maybe the Arca race had very close margins of victory and lots of close side-by-side action on the track. Heck the truck race had something like 10 trucks cross the finish line within 1/2 second of each other.
Look at how nascar responded to the fans desire to see the races end under green. Make the change, just like that, done. Look at how they played up the new 'let them race, let them wreck, let them fight' policy all during speed weeks. Maybe Indy car should adopt a similar policy and create some excitement that action craving fans seem to demand these days. People want to see open wheels dicing it out in close quarters with the drivers making daring passes and taking big risks. Racing was never intended to be a Gentleman's sport.

RE: Daytona 500

Random musing during the delay.
I normally don't get to watch much racing but this year I've seen some or all of the preceding races leading up to the 500 and I'm really excited about this year. All of the shows this week were excellent.
- Good to see Ted Musgrave back in the truck series though it doesn't sound like he has fulltime sponsorship.
- Max Papas after he qualified for the 500 - a guy who seems to really appreciate the opportunity he has, and a guy who really seems to have genuine passion for driving a race car, particularly in Nascar.
- Waltrip crying after he lucked out and qualified for the 500 was a little much for me. I sincerely hope that Truex has a very good season as I believe Napa deserves to be up front given their long-term dedication to the sport.
- That howdy doody guy did a one-on-one interview with Dale Jr the other day and asked all the usual questions. One thing I really like about Dale is he seems like a genuine down to earth person, and he faces the massive amounts of criticism head on for the most part. Quote of the interview, Dale: "Ok here is the deal, Who are you, or anyone else for that matter to tell me how to be a businessman, or how to live my life?". (paraphrased)
I hope Dale has a good season.
- Danica did a really good job in her two races. She will be a great addition to the sport and I would not be at all surprised to she her up front eventually. Yes, I get a little tired of Danica 24/7 coverage, and I get tired of hearing her say, "you know" all the time. But I'm inclined to cut her some slack as she has a mic stuck in her face 35 times each day and has to answer the same questions over and over and over.

RE: American Chopper TV Show is finished

I think Sr is still the principle owner of OC Ironworks that his other son has run since 1999 while dad made a fool out of himself on tv for the past 6 years. Maybe Sr can salvage a living out of Ironworks.
From what I understood a few shows back, Sr's other son bought the ironworks business from him and is now sole owner of it. and the boys (Sr's 3 sons) were talking about the brand new facility that was being built to house the ironworks business. BTW - Sr doesnt talk to that son either!
Well that is good to hear, maybe Sr can put in a job application at OC Ironworks when he runs out of friends and cash in the coming years.

Discussion boards for financial topics?

I am a long time paying member of Motley Fool but have become disenchanted with their discussion boards over the last several years. The board software is antiquated and not efficient, participation seems down as the Motley fool continues to push their own financial products and various private investment clubs and such.
I'm wondering what other discussion boards might be out there that have high traffic and cover a wide range of financial topics such as stocks, insurance, budgeting, investing, etc. Free is good of course but I don't mind a membership deal if the information available is value-added enough to warrant the cost.
Thanks
