RE: Trik-L-start/chassis battery maintainace

You should be disconnecting ALL batteries prior to chassis work. This will probably mean you have to disconnect the Trik-l charge leads to get the cable off. Not a bad idea to disconnect it too anyway, this will stop any discharge of house batteries while they are disconnected from charger.

RE: Leveling Jacks

I have HWH jacks. I have a front jack that does not like to come up without assistance. I took and zip tied a few of the loops together in affect tightening the spring. Now it works fine. Maybe a simple fix for your problem.

RE: Generator Question

Are your house batteries dead ? The Onan in my Winnebago would not run if the house batteries are disconnected. I was cleaning the terminals during a spring commissioning and the generator was running. When I removed the battery cable, the generator shutdown. I think the fuel pump needs the battery power and does not run off the 12v from engine.

RE: Gas to Diesel Driving: What will I notice?

We recently moved from a 2006 Winnebago Sightseer 29ft F-53 352 hp gas to a 2004 Tiffin Phaeton 40 ft Freightliner DP 330 hp. The first thing I noticed was maneuverability, the short gas frame definitely had the edge. I also needed to get used to having the steering axle behind me, not under me. In the 29 ft I was never intimidated by any road, not so in the 40ft. Next was the braking, my F-53 stopped very well. I tested panic stopping, the cat still won't talk to me. The Phaeton stops, but not close to the Sightseer. The ride was definitely not as jarring in the Phaeton, some improvement was air ride and some was length. The air ride was softer on small/mid bumps and small potholes. I found the large bumps/holes still quite jarring in either chassis. The gas engine definitely accelerated better, less weight, more hp. When up to speed, the rear engine was not heard over road noise. The gas engine while quiet did have a bit of noise present in cabin. When climbing the gas downshifted and held speed on all but steepest hills, but cabin serenity suffered greatly. The diesel seemed to hold speed the same but the rear location left us much less aware of how hard it was working to maintain speed. I have had a service done, it is 3 times as expensive as the Ford, but done less often. (The air dryer alone was $250.00) The Ford recommendation was 3k miles the Cat is 11k miles. So the jury is out as to more expensive or not. The fuel economy in the diesel was better even with bigger bus. The gas got 7.0-7.2 mpg towing a car @ 55-60 mph. The diesel was 7.8-8.0 mpg toward the same car at same speeds. Overall, in highway driving east of the Mississippi and not in New York or New England either MH was comfortable and easy to drive, set cruise and go. Toss in bumps, air ride. Toss in turns or city, give me the 29 ft.

RE: Bike carrier

Blue Ox Carrier I purchased this type of rack. It slides over to the hitch bar that goes into the receiver so your existing hitch should work fine. I got the taller (50") unit so as to block as little of the rear radiator as possible, also I do not have a cover over the bikes again as to not block the radiator. It is tall enough as to not bother the tow dolly I use. Two issues to watch, I have the 3 bike carrier, but 3 bikes would be very difficult to mount. Second, I had to get a hitch bar that was longer than standard, 16-18" I think, not much longer but enough so bike handles did not rub on rear of bus. It did work very well. I had a ladder hanging rack before and the Blue Ox is much easier to mount and secure the bikes.

RE: tire pressure confused

You need to get the tire pressure chart for the make and model tire you have and inflate for the weight carried. I had that problem and the new tire inflated to a different psi than the old tires

RE: Tiffin Phaeton Floorplan Question.

I have not seen a Phaeton with bunks. The couches in mine are jack knife style and there is plenty of room to walk between couches when open. Providing both slides are out (4 slide model)

RE: I-95 Road Conditions (Real Time)

Well I can tell you that I-295 around Richmond was by far the highway road I have ever driven on. Basketball sized holes in road surface. But I am looking for today report please.

RE: Motorhome or Motorcoach??

I am kind of partial to, "Big Ole Rolling Turd" myself. Especially after the drive I am going to make up the slush covered roads of the Northeast. Very dirty :(

RE: Why no RV"s on the road

Most of us smart ones have run south to get away from the weather your enjoying there now. Also most of the campgrounds from Virginia northward tend to close up for the winter was well.

RE: Winnebago roof weight load rating

Another factor to keep in mind is that the chassis will be overloaded quickly as the snow piles up. A 30 ft MH @ 10 lbs/sqft = 2500 lbs, depending on the snow density that may only be 6 inches of snow. At 2-3 ft of snow you have a great deal of weight up there which over time will stress the chassis springs, frame, axles and tires.

RE: We are Off to Watch the shuttle

Chewbear, I hate to be the bringer of the bad news but this is the last night-time shuttle launch before the program ends. There are only 4 launches left after this mission STS-130 launches hopefully tomorrow morning. Truthfully I can't believe they will stop the shuttle missions without having a new series of vehicles to take over. Maybe they will continue using them on a less frequent schedule. I remember staying home from school to watch Columbia first take-off in 1981.

RE: We are Off to Watch the shuttle

We are parked at Miracle City Mall for the second night to watch the launch. The mall is on Rte 1 with a vacant field across the street right on the waters edge. It is 12 miles to site 39A. The mall is almost empty except for JC Penny. The lot can hold more than came last night (50-60 RV's and hubdreds of cars). We drove around today to view other spots and for MH parking there was not any easier. Last night we snuck down and parked next to Firestone in the corner of the p-lot and tonight we are across the street in the Chase Bank p-lot. The weekend and early AM launch has made these lots available. These spots make it a very clear view from the rooftop without having to stand in the crowd.

RE: 2005 Coachmen DS Cross Country 376 SE

Yeah was there a few years ago for a few weeks. Tried to get a site this January, but too late to get site on water, already on list for 2011. Not worth the visit to the Keyes unless staying there. Kind of spoiled DW staying there on the first visit.

RE: Engine Brake: Possible to Overuse

For me, I make sure the engine brake is on when the cruise control is on. That way if quick braking is needed it is there without thinking. I generally leave it on all the time, unless I don't want it. Those times are, low traction conditions or when I am in stop/go traffic or looking to coast with lite throttle input. If looking ahead and I need it on, it is only a switch away. Being new I am not sure if this is standard but when my engine brake engages the trans downshifts briskly until it gets to 2nd gear and the bus really slows down. It is very hard to hold just enough throttle to roll and not have it keep downshifting. If looking for some speed control I will also downshift a gear or two to keep the a little throttle off braking without the engine brake downshift. Truthfully a bit of trial and error to match your driving style is needed.
