Load it back up exactly as you remember and go to the scales. I suspect that you have too little weight on the rear causing hydroplaning. It explains everything in my mind. Be sure to get weights both front and rear axles of the TV plus the axle weights of the trailer. Then drop the trailer and go back to the scales.
You should see approx equal weight added to both ends of the TV when the trailer is hitched. If this is the case, then changing the number of links will add/subtract the weight shift.

With larger trailers I find that you need to place several of them around the trailer to be effective. IMHO you would be wiser to get a large dehumidifier.

Actually it is quite common across the spectrum of RV's You can try contacting Jayco, they might send you a new one for free or for a nominal cost. When my decals go south i will just hire a painter to do them in real automotive paint and be done with it. Or I might just peal them off and have a nice shiny trailer.

My fiver has 6000 pound axles and LT tires under it. No problems so far except some weather checking due to the tires age.

Depends on who you are talking to. To me a big rig is a class 8 truck and trailer. To others it might be a trailer over 35 feet long or a diesel pusher MH.

Harry must have a stronger stomach than I do. Last time I drove that road I was car sick the whole way, and I was driving! Egads that road is bad. IMHO go south to hwy 20. It takes less than two hours on that road from 101 to I5. And the only slow spot is around Clear Lake, but you can take the bypass on the west side of the lake and go around the south side with no issues and only a couple of small climbs.

Choosing a used diesel truck for pulling a fifth wheel is much harder that I anticipated, but I know I’m among experts on this forum. I’m open minded as to manufacturer, but I do know I want a 250 or 2500 series crew cab and not a long bed. However, I need about the most pulling capacity this series has. Just keeping this about the truck, can you please tell me the major things that I need to pay attention to? If you could choose a “dream” truck in this series, what specs would it have?
What type of rear end and why?With the Duramax in the GM chassis the only rear end available is 3.73. Other brands offer 3.55,3.73, and 4.10 with their diesels. Generally speaking unless you are towing at the max or in hill country the 3.73 is sufficient.
What engine and why? (I suppose the bigger the more powerful, right?)This is really a loaded question. The Duramax is a powerful reliable motor. The Cummins is an inline 6 so by its very nature has far fewer moving parts. It also has gobs of power. Ford has not had a very good track record since the 7.3L PS ended production.
Also, can you please explain what aspects of the truck make the difference between, say, 3/4 ton and 1 ton? Generally speaking the major differences are tires,wheels,springs and the factory rating.
I sometimes see others reporting torque specs and I’m wondering about this.Torque is what moves the load down the road. When towing the lower the torque comes in the better.
Does 4x4 have any indirect/direct effects on any specs of concern?4X4 will generally lower your towing ratings. On the other hand some feel 4X4 is better for towing if you get into slippery places. Had both and IMHO don't need it unless you live in snow country.

Way back when Shasta was a good brand. However over the years their quality was surpassed by many others. If I remember correctly the Shasta name was gobbled up by Fleetwood in the late 80's. As with any RV of that age, there could likely be many issues, including wood rot, leaks, appliances that no longer work. It will take a thorough inspection and a knowledge of what you are looking for and at to not get taken.

There is nothing that would convince me to go to a short bed for towing a fiver. I like the bed space for stuff that i don't want to put in the trailer.

RE: Computer Chip on a Used Truck - Anything to Worry About?

I am a rank beginner on the topic of Computer Chip performance improvements to engines. I am looking at a 2006 Dodge Mega Cab 5.9L that has a "Computer Chip" (which is currently removed but goes with the sale of the truck).
A few questions here:
First, does the existence of a computer chip in any way effect a manufacturers remaining warranty on the diesel engine?Yes, Negatively.
Second, if I simply keep the chip removed from the truck, would it be evident that the truck was "performance enhanced"?Depends on the tuner. Some will leave a footprint that the dealer can find.
Third, is this something done regularly to trucks and should I just get over it and buy the truck - assuming all else appears good.IMHO especially if buying from an unknown source I would not buy one.
And finally, do these chips put a significant amound of additional strain on the engine - enough to cause costly damage?YES! If the previous owner ran the tuner on level 4 or 5 it could have a significant effect on motor/transmission/rear end longevity. Personally i would not knowingly buy a used diesel that had a tuner of any sort on it. Just way too many risks to worry about in the future. And I am not fond of repairing damage caused by some other idiot

I think you will see a world of difference in towing capacity and comfort when loaded. Remember also the 8.1L was also available in the 2500 SUB.

Since CCC is calculated using the weight difference between a strippo trailer and it's GVWR IMHO this number is another meaningless number. If you want to know how loaded my fiver is? That,s easy. I run when dry camping right at 13,350 pounds on a GVWR of 13,750 chassis. That is what is important, nothing else.

RE: slides and levelers.

Level first, then stabilize, then extend the slides. You do NOT want to jack a slide out and jamb it simply because you were not level.
