RE: Diebetic baby

Our dachshund went blind when he was 5 years old. He was not diabetic. It was sort of a mystery. Our vet checked the obvious and we did not pursue further investigation into the matter, ie neuro, etc. He lived to be 13. We had him put down when stomach cancer was taking away his dignity and quality of life. He adapted very well to his blindness. We carried him up and down 13 steps several times a day so he could go potty. He never messed in the house but did have a few accidents in his crate due to the cancer. His life after he became blind was pretty much the same as before except he would not go for a walk with us if he was on a leash. We took him over to a baseball park and let him run (no baseball game going on, obviously) or out in the country where he didn't need a leash. He adapted much better than his owners!!!!

RE: Teeth cleaning ?$?

When we had Molly's (dachshund) (will be 14 in May) teeth cleaned a month ago or so now, it was done at an animal hospital. The vet used pediatric IV and told me that if Molly became distressed (breathing, heart rate, etc.) they could flush the anesthesia out of her system very quickly. Anyway, she had 10 extractions and there were no problems. We did elect to have the pre-op blood tests, which the vet recommended. I had to look on the internet to find out how many teeth a dog has. Molly had 2 extractions 2 years ago, so now has 8 teeth left, since she started out with 20 total. Our 4 year old dachshund had his teeth checked and they are in excellent condition. He chews more and also is more cooperative when it comes to brushing. Molly's breath is much improved and she loves her soft Innova Sr. dog food, altho I have started adding some Innova kibble to it. Molly's bill was $536. Oh well, we don't have any kids to send to college!!!!!!

Brushing Dog's Teeth

I haven't posted in awhile but I do want to stress the importance of brushing your dogs teeth. Our 13...almost 14 y/o doxie (Molly) had to go to the animal hospital yesterday for a scheduled teeth cleaning and 'some' extractions. My DH and I were both nervous about having her anesthetized, but she came through the procedure fabulously. The downside was she had TEN extractions. She had 2 extractions a couple of years ago. We do brush her teeth 'occasionally' but not enough, that's for sure. Our 5 y/o doxie, Melvin, so far has good teeth. Now, we have to be faithful about brushing his teeth. My DH is gone alot and it is difficult for me to go solo on this project, but I guess I'd better figure it out. We give our dogs each a greenie at noon (they can tell time, too)...ha ha, and Molly was just asking for her greenie, but I had to substitute a soft treat for her. We were very impressed with the care that Molly received at the animal hospital. I just got off the phone with a tech, who called to see how Molly is doing.

RE: Steps inside 5th wheel

Hi...we also have 2 steps inside the rv...and we have 2 doxies, a 5 y/o and a 13 y/o. In '06, Molly's (13 y/o) back went out. We opted to not give her surgery and she recuperated nicely and has been ust fine since that time. The dog neurologist and the acupuncturist, along with the veterinarian, told us that the worst possible thing for doxies is for them to go down stairs or to jump down from furniture. Going up stairs and jumping onto furniture isn't good either, We lift them (the correct way) up and down from everything. They do not get on furniture unless we put them there. I would think that a ramp inside the rv would be a PITB...and outside...a longer PITB!!!!!

RE: House/Pet sitting: What do you pay?

My friend who holds down a full-time job (8-5 M-F)is the dogsitter for our two dachshunds. We pay her $25/day. The dogs allow her to sleep with them and in return, she lets them out twice b4 she goes to work and gives them breakfast. She also lets them out at noon and gives them a greenie, lets them out when she comes home from work, feeds them, walks them and spends the night. That works for all 5 of us.
